Full Version: What Grade Should I Go For?

I learned violin for more than 5 years, but i went for proper lessons for about 3 months in a year, other than that, i practice on my own. Recently, my teacher just gave me grade 5 and 1 grade 6 ameb exam piece. But I learn scales on my own. Now, i'd like to take violin exams but i can't decide to go for which grade. my teacher once asked me to straight away jump to grade 8 with all the preparations but i'm not sure about that.

I'm studying far from home. I can't afford to learn it in music centers at the place i study since it is too expansive. That's why i had proper lessons for few months only a year.

I've never taken any violin exams before, but i finish grade 8 in piano and theory, and also associate diploma in piano. Please suggest for me.

it is really difficult to tell you which grade you can take since we don't know your standard. If your teacher said you can go stright to grade 8, why not, have a go. But remember, grade 8 violin is more difficult than grade 8 / diploma on piano!

thanks for all your prompt reply.

i am now studying for B. Sc in another country, and i couldn't affort to take up private tuitions in the country i study since it is too expansive.

It is only when i have my long vacation that i go back to my own country to continue learning violin.

when i am studying broad, i just practice pieces and studies.

is it advisible to take grade 5 or grade 6?

Really? (and I'm not denying it). Is grade 8 on violin harder than on piano? Or does grade 8 / diploma mean something different? I'm doing grade 8 violin now and to my friend who just got 141/150 for his grade 8 piano it would be great to claim that my exam will be harder!

Hi happy girl!!

I think you should have a go at grade 6 because there are obviously lots more things you need to know for grade 8(like scales etc)
If you feel really confident with your scales and pieces then maybe go for grade 8 but I would go for grade 6 ish so you get a feel for violin exams!

Pete- I wouldn't know if there is a difference between grade 8/diploma piano and grade 8 violin, but if there is then maybe its because the technical side of the violin is harder- i dont really know but that is what I would think!!!!!

DavidMusic
No it's not... even if you're in some far-off country (which I'm thinking you are), I'm certain that entry for the december exams isn't already closed!!!
happygirl
Yeah, and we have exams in jun-august, once in a year!
DavidMusic
