Or perhaps a harmonica, if just the melody is needed.

That's Karen Tweed playing the piano accordion, right? If you already play keyboard, perhaps you could learn enough piano accordion yourself to record it. If you can't handle the bass and melody at once, use the multi-track recorder to do one at a time ;-)

Good suggestion from river !

Otherwise, a smallpipe will have a similar reedy sound - a concertina is another option, or you could use a sax or clarinet at a push...

Thanks for the suggestions smile.gif Sadly I can't get hold of an accordian or I'd love to have a go, in the end I think the best comnbination is going to be clarinet and/or sop. sax for the melody and strings for the sustained chords to give it a bit more body. Also I know I can definately get musicians for these instruments in college, which will make my life a bit easier rolleyes.gif smile.gif

Here's a reet blast from the past!

Just digging up this old thread to see if people are still interested in traditional fiddle - if they are, I'm happy to keep posting tunes and giving wee bits of advice on how to play them - I'm sure there are still other fiddlers on the board who can post tunes etc too.

Anyone interested? smile.gif

Excellent! The players aren't bad at all!

I'm always dead impressed when our trad music finds its way so far afield - I wonder if there are wee Irish, Scottish and English kids taking an interest in Japanese traditional music? :wanders off to find out:

Shakuhachi (end-blown wind-instrument) seems to attract westerners, and those crazy Germans even enjoy a little free-reed bamboo mouth organ (sho) with their fiddles and guitars.

Yes - me! I play mainly classical but would love to do more fiddling. I do play with a group of friends but am still thirled to the dots at the moment.

Great to have you back, rosfrog!

Hello rosfrog--I welcome you back too.

I aspire to play fiddle, but-----I can play the notes, but that is a long way from playing fiddle. Some of it seems counter-intuitive to my violin playing at the moment, but I am hoping as my general technique improves I will be more able to be flexible with stye.
I too am stuck to the printed notes----I can play some easy tunes without, but usully only after I have learned with the music.
My challenge this year is a Black Isle Fiddle Weekend in July, where learning will be by ear eek.gif

I only came back to violin last summer and didn't feel up to trying a weekend then---so am taking the plunge this year.

Looking forward to other messages on this thread
