I think ABRSM is beggining to get quite expensive. I think they should give you a reduced rate if you are going to take more than 2 exams in a year ie. doing grade 4 clarinet and grade 7 piano. You should get a reduced rate for something at least.

My theory exam cost £22. And that's only for the paper, hiring the college and paying the invigilators. Considering there are about 100 people taking an exam at each centre I think AB are just after a huge profit margin.

Ive had to pay £41 for Trinity grade 6 sax, and £46 for ABRSM grade 6 piano plus the cost of all the music, and i had to pay £46 earlier this yr for grade 6 violin.

its crazy! It becomes a very expensive interest! Like i said somewhere else, take up bellringing, its free!

The cost of theory exams will also include those who have to mark the paper, check the marking, and do all the administration before and after the event etc. It's not just what happens on the day
Practical exams aren't cheap but if you compare them with other exams, with music lessons themselves (certainly private ones) and also with the amount of money people spend on their shopping, on other entertainment etc, then really I don't think they're too bad, certainly for the lower grades.
Yes, Grade 8 is quite expensive but it does make my students (and their parents where appropriate) think hard about doing it ie they only undertake it when they are ready to be hopeful of passing it.

Yes, it costs money, but doesn't any hobby? I don't think it's so expensive, considering the pleasure it gives me.
