And me too. I am taking Grade 5, my first theory exam ever, and my first written paper for over 48 years!

[Thinks - why am I doing this?]

Good Luck everyone smile.gif

I'm also taking Grade 8 and I'm very worried as I've had extra uni work these last few weeks, so have actually really only learnt it this week - oops! My compositions for solo instruments are quite dire I've discovered! Good luck to everyone else!

I've got nerves already - how ridiculous is that?! Maybe it's because I don't know anything! Eek! Once again, good luck to everyone!

ps - one quick tip. Even if inspiration deserts you for the composition bits of the exams, write something. Doesn't matter if it doesn't look right, getting something on paper will glean some more marks, and you can always go back and polish it up again afterwards.....

I've got my grade 6 later and I'm starting to feel sick now.

Good Luck to everyone.

Ahhhh, have my grade 6 this afternoon - am soooo worried!! Transposition is something I really don't get! I have moments of 'oh yeahhh that makes sense' and then I end up over thinking it and getting confused! Hopefully they'll all be nice exams for us smile.gif Lots of 'what does crescendo mean?' please!!! tongue.gif

Best of luck to everyone taking an exam tonight - will probably end up online later tonight comparing answers wacko.gif

Maybe see some of you later (not that we'll know what we look like to say hi!) - anyone at the Reading centre too?

Best of luck h_c and everybody else! Hope it went well.
hello_cello
I thought the Grade 3 was easier than the C session Grade 2 last year!
the only thing I think I got wrong, was the rhythm writing, but I have a feeling you get 5 marks for atleast writing something that fits in with the time signature, so thats not so bad!

Vivace does mean lively, yes?

No, it means 'as slowly as possible'! rolleyes.gif tongue.gif

biggrin.gif Yup, you're right h_c. It does mean lively.
hello_cello

I was so worried there was an F# - haha.

You got the leading note - B natural - spot on too. Well done, h_c! smile.gif

I read all the good luck wishes this morning on here before I spent most of the day going over things I wasn't sure of and I think all your good thoughts did me well (I hope!)

How did everyone else do on the grade 5 theory exam?

I'm pretty sure it wasn't that bad, except I did my composition for cello and then realised when I got home that I'd written stacatto marks over one phrase. rolleyes.gif Nevermind, it not the worst thing that could have happened.

What did people write for phrasing on the first question? I had 2 possible answers - fingers crossed I chose the right one!
gedall40
Just back from my Grade 5. Thank you so much everyone for your Good Luck wishes, I am sure it has helped biggrin.gif There was no re-beaming, no rests to put in and not lots of German words to translate! I thought it was pretty much standard stuff (time signatures, transposing, cadences, intervals and composition etc) but two that got me were putting in phrase marks, and writing a descending chromatic starting on C sharp. In all the test papers I have either completed or looked through for inspiration, I have never found either of these two. Oh well, I have either guessed correctly or c****d it up! tongue.gif

I had to supress a giggle out loud at the question of which instrument could play the treble clef part - naturally I put flute and they went on to ask if it was a transposing or non-transposing instrument. That should be a couple of marks of certainty. It was the treble clef wasn't it? Don't tell me it was the bass clef!!

But if I haven't passed it is down to lots of stupid errors on my part wacko.gif

Oh well, now for the six weeks wait, but at least life can return to normality.
oldnotes
Just got back from my Grade 5 theory.
Was pleasantly surprised to find that, compared with the 2007 & 2008 papers, it was at the easier end of the range. I too am unsure about the phrasing and changed my mind slightly just before time up. I realise that I put in an unnessesary 'natural' in the melodic scale - might cost me a mark, and although I rechecked everything 3 times to use up the 2 hours I still can't be sure of a few answers.
I feel confident of a pass and reasonably hopefull of something better. Wait and see time now and concentrate on my Grade 7 piano a fortnight on Monday.
At least I can now enjoy some lighter bedtime reading and stop dreaming about intervals, minor scales and cadences, etc.. I hope everyone else is confident about their result. smile.gif sleep.gif

Glad your exam went well smile.gif My grade 6 did too yay! Although I won't get too hopeful, as I tend to get better marks when I'm thinking the worst!!

I know what you mean about not living and breathing theory stuff anymore!! My friend and I were having trouble learning the masses of performance directions, so had resorted to incorporating them into everyday conversation and relating them to bizarre things!! It worked though!!

Hope everyone else's exam went well smile.gif

I'm not sure how my grade 6 went, I got so confused with the transposing but I think I was right in the end.

Hi all,

Are you talking about the cadences question or was there a question after that? I don't remember what the last question was - did I miss it out?!

I thought you just had to write in the cadences and chord progressions, like I or II or IV or V?
oldnotes
It had better be D major!

Oh I got confused with that too!! Because it said Klarinette in B, didn't it? So I wasn't sure if they meant Bb because the German call 'Bb' 'B', or whether it did literally mean Clarinet in B!! Is that the bit you mean too? Did you end up transposing down a major or minor 2nd (or neither! unsure.gif ). I did a major 2nd in the end!

Eugh I hate transposing!! One minute I think I understand it and it makes perfect sense, and then I look and think 'WHAT?!!' and then I'm confused again!!

Let's hope we both got it right in the end!! smile.gif

I'm really not sure what I did in the end, I changed my mind that many times. It ended up with them playing the same notes as the cello's though.
