I have played the violin for a number of months now and have played both in public and in exams. My playing is pretty much professional (in both my opinion and my close friend Roger's) yet I feel one aspect of my performing still requires some improvement- HOW TO TAKE CRITICISM

This is the usual course of events.
1) I perform ( to a very high standard)
2) I listen to the comments of the judge/interrogate the audience and find out what they thought
3) I get feel very very angry hearing their lies and attract unwanted attention through my angry "antics"
4) people remember the way I reacted not THE MUSIC

How can I prevent these outbursts/stop people watching the outbursts?

I would also like to know...why would people lie to me about my performances?? Is it because they want to keep me "down to earth" and modest?? or could it be that they seriously don't like it?! but if this is the case then why would others (eg Roger+me+ some other {mostly old} people) think it sounds beautiful?

I have a performance on Thursday...so if you could get back to me before then then that would be really useful.
Thanks so much
Bernie

With all due respect, and never having heard you play Violin, it takes YEARS to master the violin and play to a "professional" standard. Even after many years of hard work and dedication, many talented musicians never attain "professional" standard playing.

If you believe after a few months that you are playing like a pro then unless you are some sort of prodigy the likes of which the world has never seen before, then you are deluding yourself about your current standard.

Try and listen to the people who are telling you the truth about your playing rather than dismissing them. I'm sure your friend means well and to him what your playing sounds good, but it's clearly not to the standard that you both think.

You say you've played in exams. Which exams have you passed?

And please PLEASE take my reply in the spirit it is intended. I'm only trying to be honest and give my opinion based on what you've written.
katyjay
Bernie, a wise old music teacher told me once that the duty of every real artist is to be controversial - that a safe and competent performance isn't doing the whole job.

It sounds like you are achieving a level of artistry that few can aspire to, and are achieving an unprecented level of controversy with it.

So pat yourself on the back at a job well done, and enjoy the drama of the reactions around you.

rofl.gif rofl.gif rofl.gif rofl.gif howDoYouDo.gif very good you have managed to get people to bite again!! I take it this is the same person who takes his trumpet for a walk in a tuba case??? I applaud you for comedy value.

Great post!

In my opinion I feel and look 21. Only trouble is, that when I look in the mirror there is this old bald chap looking back at me!

If this was even a remotely serious post, then I would recommend recording a performance and playing it back!

When I performed with my tenor sax I was sure I was the next Charlie Parker, until that is I recorded myself and heard some imposter student had switched the tapes!!!! blush.gif

That is so true. It is painful to hear the play back of what you thought was you sounding like Pollini or Argerich, only to find that you sound like a slow witted 5 year old beginner. But there is no better way to improve. I also wonder what my Grandad's photo is doing on my passport, driving license, and security passes.

Now come along everyone......don't mock what is obviously a serious post from one of the more musical members of this community. If you consider yourself to be playing at a professional level after a few months of playing then it is probably because you are doing what I advise my students to do, and that is choosing pieces that are well within your capabilities and playing them as well as your teacher could. That is to be applauded. I hate to see and hear students trying to play works that are just a little too difficult for themselves and not being able to perform them well. Remember that music in performance is intended to bring pleasure to the listener. Giving a stylish performance of something that you can play well is so much more enjoyable than giving a rather poor one of a piece that is at that moment, too advanced. Some pieces cause me to weep with the sheer joy of them. Have you ever caused any of your audience members to cry for whatever reason?

It is nigh on impossible to be professional in a few months
I've been playing my main instrument for 12 years and wouldn't consider myself professional yet
Semi-professional at a push

And in terms of getting angry for negative feedback
You need to let go of the ego a bit
If you think you're the best thing since sliced bread you will never take constructive criticism well
Listen to what people say and if they make a fair comment then build off that feedback

Sometimes at gigs/recitals you will get some prat who does go out of line but you've just got to be cool about it

I had a guy come up to me once while i was in the bathroom at the venue and he said that he hated my set and then conceded that my vocals where "poop" and I just said "Fair enough, you can do it next time and upstage me then eh?" and walked off.

When it comes down to it
Be cool and show class

There have been several negative remarks made about Bernie. Without hearing him it is difficult to appreciate his talent and artistry. Perhaps it would be possible for you to record today's performance and place it on Youtube Bernie?
I know that it is possible for a professional standard to be reached in a few months so do not doubt your word for a moment. I have heard similar comments from many woodwind players over the years after they have picked up recorders for the first time. They tell me that they are at a professional standard within hours of starting.
Please post a link to your youtube video asap Bernie.

Florence Foster Jenkins was every inch the professional though. The halls were always packed for her performances and she made her living form her singing. Ah, but he never said what that number was...

If we look at the post below and do a tiny bit of maths, we can arrive at a number. 6 years * 12 months = 72, plus another 8 months since that post was made = 80 months. Minimum.

I reckon it's possible to take more than one exam in 80+ months. ;-)

QUOTE(bernie @ Jun 24 2008, 11:57 AM) *

For the past 6 years I have had the same "teacher" but recently I have just had enough of her treatment of me. At times she has said hurtful comments like " you don't seem to be practicing enough" and one time she even said " is there any point in continuing with this lesson today when you are in this bitter mood?" She also refused to answer some of my phone calls to her. Obviously this has been GRATING at me. Over the years it became clear to me I needed to find a new teacher.

The problem is, as much as she IRRITATES me, this woman has improved my play over the years and has invested a lot of time in "teaching me". I don't want to hurt her feelings...how should I phrase it to her that I think I need to get a new teacher. I've thought of 3 options...which is best?

1) NO OFFENSE at ALL, but I SOMETIMES hate your style of teaching and I NEED to change. I wish I could stay but I think it could drive me mad. ( I would make sure that she realised that i meant no offense )

2) I'm quitting the violin ( then secretly get a new teacher )

3) I'm moving to another city/country, feel free to come with me ( this with the expectation that she will decline )

If anyone has any better ideas then let me know, if not just tell me which number is best.

Thanks,
Bernie

Petrat is quite right that we should give Bernie the benefit, and treat his post with the seriousness it deserves.

He has evidently discovered that there is room in the tuba case for both the trumpet and the violin (not to mention the stuffed animals biggrin.gif ). It is therefore quite possible that he is confusing some of these during his public recitals - e.g. playing the trumpet with the bow, playing the violin with a stuffed animal blink.gif , etc). No doubt the video will clarify, when posted.

I've had similar problems to Bernie in finding a suitable carrying bag for my piano. Can anyone help, Please?

Who needs to put a piano in a case. Did you not see the programme where a man pushed his piano down the road to busk on the underground...case indeed tut
petrat
I have just had a new case for my contrabass recorder and find that my digital piano fits inside it rather well.
It is usual for pianos in halls etc to be covered with canvas covers and these instruments aren't really portable. The best plan would be to get in a specialist firm when you need to move your piano.
