Hi all,

I'm after an (any!) example of a piece by Hindemith that is one of his teaching pieces, and has flexible scoring, ie. can be played by any combination of instruments. (And preferably something I can find easily in a library!) I have vague recollections of these things existing, but am not entirely sure what I need... Can anyone help? If I can't come up with anything by Hindemith, I'd be happy with someone / something similar.

I haven't sufficient knowledge of Hindemith's music to be helpful here.
However, what about J.S. Bach's 'Art of Fugue' ? I am sure an open score edition of this work will be easily obtainable, especially from a good music library. My own copy is edited by Donald Francis Tovey and published by Oxford University Press. AND the 'Art of Fugue' is/has been played by all sorts of instrumental combinations.
Hope this is a helpful suggestion.

Can't help with Hindemith, but you may like to have a look at the Web site of Contemporary Music-making for Amateurs (CoMA). They have built up a big library of music - 1,000+ works! - some of which they commissioned, including a variety of pieces for flexible ensemble.

There's a search facility linked to the repertoire page:
http://www.coma.org/repertoire
"Feel free to browse the collection, view scores and listen to sound clips on this site. You can purchase copies of works for your ensemble and even submit works of your own."

Paul Burnell, one of the composers listed, also has his own Web site which offers some free downloads including flexibly scored pieces:

Good hunting!
