I cannot remember how the last part of Test 8A is played. It involves the identifcation of the last four chords of a phrase.

Here are my questions:
1) Are the chords played in tempo or at a slower tempo?
2) Is the candidate expected to identify the chords one at a time during the second playing, or identify all the chords after hearing the chord progression twice?

I am currently preparing two very young pupils for the Grade 8 exam. This is the most difficult part of the aurals for them.

My "Aural Training in Practice" book says the following about this part of the test.

".....Then proceed (to the last part of the test) 'Listen while I play the last four chords again. First here is the key-chord .....' (Examiner then plays all four chords.) 'Now identify these chords .......' (Examiner plays chords again, pausing after each for the answer.)"

So the answer to your second question seems to be that the candidate identifies the chords one at a time. Hope this helps smile.gif

When I did my G8 around 4 years ago I recall that the examiner played the piece through first and got me to identify the cadence. (Can't remember whether he played it once or twice).

Then he played each of the last 4 chords one at a time and waited till I said what it was before playing the next one, much as described in jm-hamilton's post.

Of course you can remind your candidate that if they can identify the cadence then that at least has the last 2 chords already identified.

I also found this the hardest part of the test although on the day somehow it all clicked - hope it does for your pupil too. smile.gif
