If I'm actually going to do this (with lottie smile.gif) I need to pick a C piece pretty sharpish but I have no idea where to start. Any suggestions/opinions would be gratefully received.

the pieces are:
1 Leroy Anderson Fiddle-Faddle, arr. Arnold (Viola World/Music Sales)
2 Bloch Affirmation: 3rd movt from Suite Hébraïque (Schirmer/Music Sales)
3 Derek Bourgeois Caprice for Viola and Piano, Op. 119a (Brass Wind)
4 Rebecca Clarke Morpheus for Viola and Piano (OUP)
5 Paul Coletti From My Heart: from Three Pieces for Viola and Piano (OUP)
6 Aaron Minsky The Flag Waver: from Three American Pieces for unaccompanied viola, trans. Dalton (OUP: special order)
7 Vaughan Williams Christmas Dance: No. 3 from Suite for Viola, Group 1 (OUP)

ps why when I type in 'grade 8 viola abrsm' into google does it say 'do you mean grade 8 violin?' How violaist is that?!

Except Lottie is doing Grade 3.. Grade 8 might take a few more hours practice..... laugh.gif

Well I 'youtube'd' them...

I like Fiddle-faddle a lot - that sounds like really good fun.. great if you're full of energy!
Bloch Affirmation - yuk! blush.gif I'm sure somebody loves it but it's not my kind of thing... rolleyes.gif
Couldn't find the Derek Bourgois but the serenade for wind band is a sweet piece
I found a Rebecca Clark sonata for viola which was really lovely.. very nice and I'd love to play it wub.gif
Couldn't find Paul Coletti
Found some Aaron Minsky cello pieces which were very interesting.. wish the viola piece was there though
The Vaughan Williams was typically pastoral but I loved the lyricism.. lovely if you're in a gentle mood

So there's my youtube survey laugh.gif I wish I was taking grade 8 - the music is grown up and really fabulous!

For my 'C' piece I'm playing 'Summertime' from Porgy and Bess... just like this.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blPKo4GuAtQ

I agree with Lottie: not the Bloch: it's horrid.

1 Leroy Anderson Fiddle-Faddle - i liked it, definate maybe
2 Bloch Affirmation - no
3 Derek Bourgeois Caprice - couldn't find it
4 Rebecca Clarke Morpheus - not contrasting enough with the glasunow elegie but a nice piece
5 Paul Coletti From My Heart - couldn't find it
6 Aaron Minsky The Flag Waver - couldn't find it
7 Vaughan Williams Christmas Dance - it was ok.

i think i'll probably go with the fiddle-faddle, see what my teacher says tomorrow

Funny enough my daughter did the Bloch Affirmation,, she said she needed proper contrast to the others. I absolutely love Rebecca Clarke Morpheus

She also did the Bach Prelude from List A and the Bruch Romance in List B

If you are able to listen to the pieces first it does help.

Good Luck

I'm doing the bach prelude and the glasunow elegie. I did love the morpheus, but I want a piece that is more contrasting with the elegie.
thanks for the advice.
