Full Version: Practise Or Practice?

I read in another thread how it can be difficult to decide between the noun and verb practise/practice - ie, which one's which. I was writing a little passage before and I used the word 'advise' - a lightbulb idea.gif appeared above my head. What if advise and advice has the same rule. We never think about these two because they're phonetically different. Lo and behold, according to www.dictionary.com:

practice and advice - noun singular
practise and advise - verb

It is needless to say that I am very proud of myself! I hope this helps you in the future smile.gif

Good point!

I originally memorised the verb as being the one that looks ok with -ing on the end -

ie practising looks fine with 'sing': practicing looks odd with the C in front of the ing - 'cing'.

Although yes I know that US spelling is the same for both so 'practicing' is considered normal - I still find it looks odd, and it worked when I needed to learn it.

Don't know if it will help.

I've always used advice and advise when trying to spell practice and practise...

I always remember that c is noun, s is verb, because c is before s in the alphabet, and n is before v.

I think you mentioned this before Miss Ross and I have been using it ever since!

Thanks! party1.gif

This has been my bug-bear all my life to the point of avoiding using it. I have it written on a yellow sticky and attached to my pc screen.

Sometimes you forget to spell the easiest of words. I had a recent blank on the word 'of', I kept writing 'ov' !! I knew it was wrong but couldnt remember what was the correct way to write it and had to call my husband and whisper my request down the phone! That was scary, I was thinking dementia, senility, care homes.... ph34r.gif But that was a couple years ago smile.gif

Ah! So when I get it wrong I can blame it on hanging out with Americans on the internet...biggrin.gif

Not thinking about it doesn't always mean that people get it right, of course...! wink.gif

But it is far more important to do it than to know how to spell it.

Tequila
Practice is a noun because ice is a noun

therefore practise is the verb.

Took me a while to get this but once got never forgotten!!!

Also the Doctor's Practice is spelt this way (noun)

So The practice

To practise.

the advise/ advice way is good too. smile.gif

Practise is a verb because it has "is" (which is part of a verb) in it.

Dunno about practising; but I believe I can do advising rather well. laugh.gif

Compare licence and license - same noun/verb distinction. Wonder which boffin decided on that in the first place?

Oh come on - you know you're never going to convert me on this one tongue.gif
Plus you confessed to me in private something which could somewhat invalidate your argument... rolleyes.gif
