Full Version: Viola Sound

Hi, I have recently rekindled my interest in my viola after a bad start last year, and am enjoying it a lot more (the benefit of another year's violin practice seems to have improved things).

Generally it isn't a bad sound but it's still quite over-resonant - in that sometimes I feel as though I have to damp the C string to stop it ringing through subsequent notes. Is this normal, and just part of the difference between violin and viola technique, or is it just what to expect from a mediocre viola? Sometimes it sounds quite viol-like which would be ok if I wanted to play a viol... It is strung with dominants at present.

Can't help with your question but my viola really 'rings' too. Far more than my violin.
