My anti-virus program has shown me that my computer has become infected with the Conficker Worm as soon as I logged onto the forums in the early hours of this morning. Apparently the Worm has infected the ABRSM forums, spreading the Worm onto all computers which log on, and my computer has now become unstable.

I have PM'd the mods to inform them, and suggest that, if you have logged on to the forums, you log off the forums straightaway and perform a full system scan before all the data on your PC is deleted - if it's not already too late.

as far as i'm aware, Conficker can't spread itself by infecting a website--are you sure that's how it happened?

Yup. My anti-virus log is emphatic about this. Google Conficker, and you'll find that it probably can infect websites. Nobody knows just exactly what it can do yet. All that is known is that it is bad news.
