Full Version: Suitable E For Oliv Strings

Daughter has been given a partial set (G,D and A) of Oliv Strings to try. Can anyone advise as to what E String would be a good match for this set. unsure.gif

I used a Hill E with mine. I like the sound of the Olivs but found they did not stay in tune as well as I need as my violin experiences changes of temperature and humidity far too often (I am a jobbing violinist and teacher).

What strings does she use at the moment?

Hill is good. Also, if the fiddle isn't too lacking in projection or muffled, then a gold e might do the trick. Otherwise I can't enthuse enough about Larsen Tzigane as an e string. Very nice.

She has Larsen Tzigane strings on at present. Like rosfrog I find the E string on this set exceptional but my daughter not having used gut strings before (this has been a request from her teacher) was not sure if this E string may have been a little bright. I'm not planning on putting the Oliv strings on for a few weeks yet as the Tzigane strings are still performing well. Her teacher uses Eudoxa strings with a soft E. We have only ever used a medium Hill which was ok, but nothing special. Just thought I'd ask in case anyone has found a particular E which blends well with them. If a soft Hill E blends well with Eudoxas, I expect it may well sound just as good with the Oliv strings, although realise these are a higher tensioned string. Daughters violin is a Blondelet, and projection is extremely good, (one of the reasons we bought it) so tone and not volume is the main consideration. Dreading putting these strings on to be honest as I always hear such negative things about gut strings and the majority of people seem to use synthetics, but feel I should at least try them as her teacher feels they'll sound great on her violin. We'll see.

Honestly, Tracy - you'll most likely find that the gut sounds hardly any different from the Larsen Tzigane, but is less responsive, lasts less time and goes out of tune more frequently...

This is true. The way you have to use the bow is also quite similar (compared relative to other synthetic strings) so there's little to be gained from using gut, unless she has a particular love of them...although I can't imagine why anyone would, practical issues considered.
