Can anybody please point me to some baroque viola music? Other than the Telemann Concerto which I'm going to buy when I'm a bit more competent blush.gif

Either with viola/violin accompaniment (duets?), or with a CD of accompaniments.

I don't mind backing CD's because I only play for fun in the house anyway laugh.gif (not in public ph34r.gif )

I was told that there are some parts/movements that aren't too hard, so you might be able to manage some of them.

Other than that, why not have a look for ideas on the viola exam syllabus A lists? It'll have collections mentioned that you might want to get hold of and maybe the graded exam CDs might be some use as backing as well??

I know there's probably stuff in the pile of viola things at home, but I would probably need to go have a dig through the pile before I remember any of them.

Just off the top of my head in the meantime, how about Vivaldi sonatas (I think there's a set of six of them which are transcribed from his cello sonatas)?
Handel sonatas (transcriptions of the violin ones) are good too. smile.gif

There are also the Bach gamba sonatas, but they might be a small bit tricky. You could have a look at them though to see how you find them.

I do remember someone telling me about some nice baroque stuff in some of the later Suzuki books (about book 3 or 4 I think), but I think those would be in the violin books and I have no idea whether the viola books have the same repertoire. Again they might be worth looking into

Actually, if you haven't started the Bach cello suites yet, a good place to start might be the two Bourreés from the first suite in G smile.gif

Don't worry - I seem to remember reading somewhere that you'd braved a couple of the easier bits of the violin sonatas and partitas. The easier movements of the cello suites are not too bad to get around the notes. The very first movement is quite accessible as are quite a few of the others. Look at the syllabus lists (both AB and Trinity) for some pointers.

I haven't got a viola recording unfortunately but hubby recently bought me the Steven Isserlis cello recording which is absolutely fantastic if you want some more inspiration and ideas.
