What are your ways of remmebring the music glossary terms?

I just realised how little time i have before March to memorise terms from g.2-g.5 ohmy.gif

DomRUK
Three a week!
all ears
Put them in a sentence in your own language, then memorize the sentence - helps you remember what they really mean!

Alternative: learn Latin... dry.gif

Two tips -

Firstly, write them out, eg. ritmico = rhythmically, and say the words out loud as you write. This helps create a strong neural pathway in the brain. I heard that you have to use a new word 18 times before it is completely committed to memory, so get used to the idea of writing these terms out a lot. A lot of trees and ballpoint pens died in the process of my memorising the terms!

Secondly, as DomRUK says, tackle three a week. (It might be worth a quick count of how many words there are, then dividing that into the number of weeks you've got till the exam). Then each week, write the new words on Post It Notes and stick them in places that you go to frequently each day. (I stuck mine on the wall behind the kettle!) So then you are reminded of the words several times a day.

It works, I promise! I had three months to cover Grades 1-5, and if I can do it anyone can!

Good luck,

Yeah I did that!
I cover the english up, say them in English, check, cover the foreign up, say them, check. If I had to spell them I'd write them out the same way, but I don't think you have to do that wink.gif
It might not work for you, but It's helped my french, german and spanish loads!

I was told not to bother learning the Italian terms for the exams. They are only worth a couple of marks, so there is no point in spending as much time on them as it takes. Spend your time more wisely on something worth more marks, like scales or composition.

Especially when they don't even ask a terms question, like this grade 5 paper just gone! laugh.gif

Seriously though, it might be worth learning them as it will help if you come across them in your music when performing, or even... sight reading in an exam! I remember having no idea what "lunga" meant when I came across it at grade 5 violin in a sight reading test, and the examiner actually commented on my not having observed that particular direction on the mark sheet (picky examiner, but still!)... I then took the grade 5 theory the following term and learned what it meant in the process.

If you play a variety of music and always look up directions you don't know then you should be at least half way there.

You have plenty of time! I had to rush g3-g5 terms in about six days before my theory exam.

Actually, once a exam paper had 5 terms in it worth 2 marks each total 10 marks so learn them but don't bother too much with French and German terms because they rarely come up. I think the last time they set German was about 7 or 8 years ago (?)

It's sod's law that the next exam will be teeming with french and german!!!!

I had a german one when I did mine! That was a year and a half ago.

I'll pick out those frequently use Italian, German & French terms from the past exam papers. Or find any similarity between Italian term & the meaning in English.

I had french ones, (three of them) in mine, and me and French is a disaster~ fortunetly knowing this, I drilled myself in them the morining of the exam, so got them all correct! smile.gif

As for learning them, try going through a few each night before bed~ it works wonders!

strongly agree with Sbhoa ! isn't this what all those terms are really for, anyway ??

If you learn them only when you have a theory exam coming up aren't we separating practical and theory once again ?

(But recording them on to cassette also works quite well - I've done this with language learning ! Play it in the car, on the bus, walking to work / school / wherever.)

Good luck

No don't do this...!

Seriously, I cannot stop myself saying fee-nay when I purely mean fine these days! smile.gif

Although if you have no problem with not being able to speak English then go ahead...

(This is from a person that bewilders people by accidentally slipping into German without realising it~ and I've started doing it with Spanish and Cornish now I've started learning those two~ trust me, its embaressing!)

Lol, I do that with French, Spanish and German but then so do lots of my friends. Mostly German - shame I'm not doing GCSE German!

Its so nice to here I'm not the only one! Most people in my school found it kinda freaky...

mind you... I have this feeling they found all of me kinda freaky! huh.gif

Ok.. This is a true story.
The lady who used to sit next to me in choir was always asking about the written music.
What the note is, how long it is, stuff like that.
Sometimes she asked things which she wouldn't understand even if I explained them (you try to explain compound time inside 2 minutes).
One day she sat and looked at the copy in front of her and, after some consideration, turned to me and said 'Andante.... thats how you cook pasta isn't it?'
No... she was NOT pulling my leg!

Along similar lines is to read fsharpminor's thread on Musical Horses as they're often named after musical terms! The only snag is that the nags aren't graded so you could be learning a Grade 5 term when you're only on Grade 2, but I guess that will give us a head start so that we romp home for Grade 5 biggrin.gif

For Grade 2 I had yellow stickers all over the house, ran out of time to do it for Grade 3 but I think I got away with it because they asked something really easy, but I'm going to try and get to grips with it again for Grade 4 huh.gif

PS I thought I'd resurrect this thread cos there's some good advice on page 1 about learning musical terms
