sbhoa, long long before ITV1 became national and things were on at different times in different regions, on LWT (but not Thames) in between the adverts there was this rapid pattern of small white squares moving from left to right across a black screen before the last white square would swell in size to fill the screen. This would happen really quickly before anyone could ask what was going on.
My own region, ATV used tohave its own screen pattern between the ads, with the two 'eyes' of the ATV logo, but was discontinued in the late 1970s, whilst LWT's continued into the 80s.
In the 90s, Westcountry TV (serving an area of SW England southwest of Bridgwater and Glastonbury and west of Dorchester) had a brief 'W' logo which would pop up between the ads. Nowadays on what has become 'ITV1' we see the logo at the beginning and end of commercial time only, with just a blank screen in between each ad.
Bit of telly history for you there. English telly has to be the best in the world!!!!

Gosh, thank you Barry! The last time I saw that was on our old Phillips dual standard B/W set rented from Visionhire with the huge dial you'd turn to '4' for BBC1 and '8' for ATV. Mind you I don't miss it as much as our old Sobell radiogram with the broken steel legs that every Sunday morning my mother would move to clean behind, then put back plug in and turn on in time for Family Favourites with Jean Challis (which you had to switch to 1500 metres Long Wave for). All those BFPO's, were they some sort of subversive coded messages, methought????...

Google are at it again. They have a logo today (or rather, a choice of three logos) commemorating Francois Truffaut's 80th birthday (or would have been, had he lived beyond 52).
