I dont know about anyone else, but doing a grade 6 aural requires you to sing and i cant sing a note in tune!!! How can i improve and does any one else feel this way???? huh.gif

Hi, I've just taken Grade 8 and had to do aural tests singing the bass part - I was bad enough singing the treble part for Grade 6! I couldn't really sing at all for the Grade 8 tests, and even told the examiner so! If you can't sing the tests it's not the end of the world, you'll just have to make up the marks elsewhere in the exam - I still passed with merit, although I failed my aural tests. wink.gif

cant say i feel the same way because i LOOOVE singing and i took grade 5 singing exam and loved it. dont worry. you play piano? which instrument? well anyways, whichever instrument you play, just play one note at a time and try to sing the exact note. practice, practice, practice.

p.s. grade 6 and 7 are no harder than grade 5 =]

Join a choir. I was highly opposed to this myself, until I started college and it is compulsary. But i enjoy it now ohmy.gif

join the choir and try to sing a lower part if there's like 2 parts in the music...i think that helps...and try to listen to the bass wehn the pianist or organist is playing...

I think Grade 7 Aural is a big gap from Grade 5 & 6.

I've narrowly passed Grade 7 Aural but I can't remember the tune the examiner plays 4 part a)

In Grades 4 to 8 the first test in Aural the "A" test can be sung back or played back. If you really cannot sing, then why not try playing back your answer.

The sight-singing test, the "B" test in each grade is exactly that and there are no alternatives!

So, try to improve your singing by finding a voice coach who'll help you (even if for a fairly short period of time), join a choir to gain confidence with your voice.

If you haven't got time to do either of those, work with your teacher on playing back for Section A and then it will only be the "B" test that will be a real problem for you.

That's how I handle things when I get a student who, for whatever reason, is really struggling to sing. (I also spend a lot of time working to help them improve but having alternatives up your sleeve is useful too.)

That's a very odd statement: there is a huge gap between grade 6 and 7 aural: it is far harder than grades 5 &6. If grade 7 were no harder why would it be called grade 7 as opposed to grade 5 or 6 again!

Try getting some sight singing books, most people who think they can't sing can really it just needs some focus. You can start right from the beginning (soh, doh, doh, soh) then start introducing the other pitches.

If you know any Kodaly teachers as well they will be able to help.

I also have the same problem, just can't get the right pitch for singing.
