Do you need grade 8 piano to do the diploma? I thought you did, but a friend says grade 6 is all you need? Who's right?
Seeing that so many jump grades, if that's the case, why aren't more people doing the diploma in lieu of grade 7/8 ...
Also do people ever do Jazz piano which I think only goes up to grade 5 when you already have grade 8 piano? Presumably to show you can do different genres?
Which has more weight/harder - distinction at Jazz piano grade 5 or distinction at the normal practical piano grade 5?

You will need Grade8 piano to do piano diploma.
I believe that you will also need Grade 6 theory to do the piano teaching diploma (or any teaching diploma for that matter).
Hope that helps.

You need Grade 8 in the instrument which you are going to offer in the Diploma.
And yes, I've had pupils who are at the higher grades in piano taking up the Jazz Piano syllabus. I think it's great and provides a whole new outlook on their playing.
I wouldn't say one's easier or harder than the other, they're just different. But having Grade 5 jazz will count as your 'passport' to doing Grades 6-8 instead of doing the theory or musicianship Grade 5, and, of course, the classical Grade 5 does not provide this.

Yes, Grade 8 is a requirement to take the diploma - although if you check the Diploma syllabus there are some listed alternatives.
The diploma is of a much higher standard than grades 6-8. You have to sightread a grade 6 piece for the DipABRSM. It's really not something you can 'skip to'. The recital is over half and hour and the repertoire is very demanding. The level expected is that of a professional recital. It's really not something to be taken lightly. Have a look at the syllabus for an idea of what's expected. It's a world away from the graded examinations.

I would think that grade 8 is a pre-requisite for all first-tier diplomas from ABRSM.
Even if it was not a pre-requisite, I would think that doing grade 8 first before moving on to a diploma is better because the standards expected of a grade 8 and diploma candidate is extremely different. In fact, it is exponentially higher for the latter candidate.

Hi
It is a requirement to have a grade 8 practical cert in whatever instrument u are performing. Only then can you sit for a diploma, more specifically dipABRSM. This applies to the performance diploma.

A diploma is a huge leap from grade 8 and so I would not recommend anyone considering it without a grade 8 plus a few years further study.

As everyone has said - yeah you need G8 in the instrument you are offering for diploma. But in terms of Jazz Piano, I wouldnt say that either jazz or classical were harder, though to study both is pretty good, as it is completely different,
I took up jazz at G5 when I already had G8 classical piano. I enjoyed it fully, and I reckon that it's widened my music knowlege and appreciation
