Sorry to bring down the mood, but I failed Grade 5 theory. (Snivvle, sniff, sob, sob). Got text from violin teacher - I got 60%, which I'm furious with myself about because I made three really idiotic and completely avoidable mistakes as a result of panic, (as opposed to lack of knowledge), and if I'd not made two of them (or possibly even just one) I'd have passed. Can't sit Grade 8 till March now...grrrrrrrrrrrr

I'm a stupid girl.

Sorry to hear your result false-harmonica. I'm still waiting for mine - and as the days go by I wonder more and more about if I misread questions or made silly mistakes.
For your next attempt really look at where you can pick up some easy marks (like writting out the scales) and make a little check list (in your head) of easy mistakes to make - like ascending instead of decending etc.
I think you can aim high in your G8 now though with an un-intentional delay you should be more prepared.

Very good points BerkshireMum and smd. Sorry about your disappointment false-harmonic - but you're not stupid, you just made some mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes. Make good use of the extra time and all the best for your grade 8. thereThere.gif

Well done Jazzycat. Always nice to hear from another Clarinettist.

Although I don't recommend rushing onto the next grade too much I think there's some really nice stuff in the G6 syllabus.

Not stupid at all! I'm sorry you didn't pass, but it will be good to have had the experience when you do it again. Go and buy yourself a new frock, a bottle of wine and some flowers and put it behind you!

Yes, I think I will need to look hard at the mark sheet and will probably be able to work out from that where I went wrong, will learn for next time. I wish we could get papers back!

Congratulations to everyone who passed their exams. A 5 year old friend of mine passed Grade 2 violin.

smd: there is some lovely stuff on the g6 list and I think it's going to be the Mozart, the Finzi Romance and the Demnitz b minor study. Or possibly the Rach Vocalise. Or the Finzi Prelude. Or the Rach study. It's so hard to choose smile.gif

You must be doing well.
I'm some way from considering grade 6 yet.
Far too many things for me to improve on first.

I did think about leaving it for a while but after my lesson last week, my teacher said 'Grade six in December, then?' and I agreed that we could work towards it and learn some other stuff as well...

Yes, there are loads of things I need to improve. I rushed through my flute grades and ended up having to re-learn everything so I am trying not to make that mistake again rolleyes.gif . I think that having learned the flute has helped with my breathing and fingering/co-ordination on the clarinet. I am really getting to grips with the instrument itself rather than the musical aspects of things, if that makes sense? Tongueing is one aspect on which I shall have to do some serious work!

I think I need the exam as motivation - one step further towards developing my technique and musicianship. Without something definite to work towards, I'm less likely to work on the things which need improving... smile.gif

Tonguing is a bit different on clari as compared to flute : it can sometimes feel strange to place your tongue on the reed. It may well be worth trying tonguing using different parts of the tongue, on different parts of the reed, to see what suits you best. smile.gif

Same here as it's a second instrument for me too.
Was trying to list necessary improvements in my head just before my grade 5 exam.
I soon realised that it was pretty much everything and wondered how I suddenly went from being reasonably good to needing lots of improvement....

It is pretty much everything with me! I think as things improve, you find that there is so much more scope for improvement smile.gif. At first I was pleased just to be able to make a reasonable sound, but now 'reasonable' isn't nearly enough - I want 'beautiful'! All the time!

I'm in shock. ohmy.gif After a disasterous exam, stopping in the study and the same examiner giving my pupils lousy marks, I somehow managed 128 for my Grade 5 flute! biggrin.gif

List: C04 25
Scales 17
Sight Reading 19
Aural Tests 18
Total Marks 128

Which pieces did you play?
Appassionata
Telemann Sonata in Bb maj 3rd/4th mvt, McDowall Hornpipe and Baroque flute. The Grade 6 pieces look easier in some respects though. The Telemann was so hard in comparison! None of my pieces were in the book, so I think the examiner may have been more generous with her marking! tongue.gif

laugh.gif cunning! My flute student who recently took G5 had all non-book pieces - I think the fact that the book looked like exam music utterly put her off! I don't think I know any of yours well, and don't know the Telemann at all unsure.gif

I have a mental block with AB G6 - I have been meant to take it several times and have lost my bottle entirely, so have to admit I don't think I've even looked to see what is on the current G6 list... I did know a few off the old list, I don't know how many survived the revamp. I do remember that the scales were the bit that terrified me blush.gif ohmy.gif

Any strong contenders for choices or have you not got that far yet?

One of these days I may have to enter a student for TG exams, so maybe I'll summon up my courage to do TG G6 one day with the excuse that I'm just trying it out rolleyes.gif laugh.gif blush.gif

The scales do look awful I agree sad.gif I'm thinking of playing the Stanley - Poco Allegro from Solo in B min, Gaubert - Sicilienne and Stokes - Con brio: No.6. I may even be brave and take the exam at Xmas given I'm on a roll!
sarah-flute
I ended up feeling about G7 vs G6 how you described feeling about G6 vs G5 *wry grin* - though somewhat lost my nerves about flute exams in general. Mental block - argh. Need to get over it at some stage eek.gif sad.gif

My flute teacher reckoned the G7 scale requirements were actually easier because you had more chance of being asked for a reasonable scale amongst the vile ones, whereas in G6 the proportion of absolute stinkers is much higher laugh.gif

I don't know the Stanley at all, or that Gaubert, blush.gif though I love Gaubert generally. The Stokes Con Brio is great fun, I'd recommend that one biggrin.gif I enjoyed making it (or at least trying to...) sound like I was actually improvising. As studies go, it's a lorra lorra fun biggrin.gif Good luck!

I just got my grade 3 violin marks and I passed with 114. It has been 45 years since the examiner wrote "marginal pass, recommend leaving it some time before attempting the next grade" on my grade 2 paper, at which time I quit learning.

It's taken me a year of learning again to get to grade 3. I will leave it a while before attempting grade 4, because I think I need to catch my third position tuning and counting time up with my exam grade .... but not another 45 years! happy.gif

I am really happy to have my grade 3 finally though. Wonderful teacher who keeps on my case about every little thing. I couldn't have done it without her. biggrin.gif
