QUOTE(barry-clari @ Aug 31 2009, 12:15 PM) *

I'm off 'cello shopping in the next few days. I'm going to be good, in any case, and I won't touch it 'til my first proper 'cello lesson. Don't want to pick up any bad habits! biggrin.gif

Wow, I didn't realise how expensive they were! ohmy.gif

That'll be motivation enough to do well with it! Good luck, Barry!

I'm not going top of the range! There's a good chance I'll hire an instrument.

Thanks for the good wishes Solari smile.gif

I think you should!

I still have this thought of a string trio (you, me, Flossie) at a forum gig some way out in the future... biggrin.gif
Babybird2
Yep. Flossie and you can play the hard bits while I struggle along with the easy viola parts laugh.gif

No. I'm probably around grade 2ish.

I can't sight-read at all out of 1st position. wacko.gif
Babybird2
That's better than me then. I probably wasn't even at G1 when I stopped lessons laugh.gif

I'm expecting Barry to overtake both of us quite quickly. laugh.gif

I hope you really enjoy it.

You didn't tell us how the cello shopping went! Did you buy or rent? Did you go to Malcolm Tysoe? I'm rather impressed with them at the moment as I needed valuations on 2 instruments for insurance purposes - one we bought from them and one they replaced the bridge, so they have seen them both. I thought I would have to drive over with them, but they are sending the valuation by e-mail, which makes life that bit easier.

We await news of your lesson with impatience! - I'm guessing it's not until this evening

For the time being, I'm going to borrow a 'cello from one of the schools I teach in. I have my eye on several instruments, but can't make a decision yet! laugh.gif

Lesson today was great biggrin.gif . Learned about bowing and pizzicato, and have been introduced to 1st position. Thanks iona, you're a great teacher! smile.gif

Hey.... What can I say, apart from 'what a great student'.

P'raps I ought to address my 'poking student with bow' teaching technique. I'm not sure it's the best motivational tool smile.gif

(I think borrowing a 'cello is the best idea for the mo. Not many people get that option).

Hope to see you soon.

'Perhaps I ought to address my 'poking student with bow' teaching technique. I'm not sure it's the best motivational tool smile.gif '

My daughter's violin teacher was telling me about a teacher he knew who used to correct the students' tendency to hold the violin in a 'frying pan ' hold by attaching a drawing pin to the violin so if the wrist went inwards the child got pricked!

Glad you had a good time. The 'cello makes a great sound! (not as good as a viola of course!)

I'm going to like this 'cello playing lark! biggrin.gif Would like to see how far I can go... smile.gif

Well, I borrowed another school 'cello to play in my lovely teaching space I get yesterday. It sounded vaguely cello-y, with the occasional creaky moment...

Priority is to make the cello sound cello-y! biggrin.gif

You could do something like 2,4,6,8.

That's quite a nice pattern laugh.gif Or 1,5,8 laugh.gif

1, 5, 8 is more likely. I don't want it to be a procession of exams, one after the other...
Babybird2
1,5,8 is probably good. Might be a bit if a gap between 1 and 5 though,

Maybe 2 or 3, 5,8 laugh.gif
