Miss Ross
Just wondering how the forumites doing SG, Higher and Advanced Higher Music have got on? I know the AH practical exams for my old school were today - has anyone else done theirs?

What were the set works this year? smile.gif I remember last year when I wasn't actually made aware of there being any sets works for AH, and looking at the exam paper without a clue as to what I was meant to be doing. ph34r.gif Good times.

So, please, indulge my fascination with the courses I have left behind, sadly. rolleyes.gif

In fact, discuss anything about it you like! smile.gif Do you any of you ever get the feeling that we're being regarded as inferior to people in other parts of the UK doing a course with a different name? wink.gif

I've got my higher music listening on Tuesday smile.gif ... I have absolutely no idea what the set works are... our school hasn't taught us any listening the whole year sad.gif Do I need to know any set works??! ph34r.gif I was told it didn't matter... My practical exam was back in March - my friends doing advanced higher had their practical on Tuesday of this week - I don't understand why the advanced higher exams are so much later than the others blink.gif
Yeah, I do think that Higher/Adv higher music isn't seen as "worthwhile" like A level and I think that's why quite a few scottish schools are now doing AS level instead.. It is annoying, but I can see where it is coming from - the requirements don't seem to be half as demanding!
Are you at Aberdeen Uni now? How are you finding it? Xx

I did the Int 2 listening paper at the start of May. It was actually quite a good paper and not too difficult and it had some good recognisable music in it!! My practical exam was in March (?) i think! I think it was alright aswell so hopefully I will get a decent grade for it all in August.

Good luck to anybody still to do their Higher/Adv. Higher papers. smile.gif

My practical for Advanced Higher was yesterday! I think it went okay, the examiner at the end told me I had real talent, soo I'm guessing that's a good sign biggrin.gif
Fiona - whaaaaaat?!?! What's a set work?? I have nooo idea. Ahh! We've not been taught much over the past year. Enlighten me please tongue.gif Exam's on Tuesday...
Miss Ross
Yay, replies! biggrin.gif ph34r.gif

Harpist - I'm not, no. I took a very last minute gap year and am off to York university in September. smile.gif

I think Higher is as worthwhile as AS, from what I've seen of the two. And with AH, well - you know universities won't ever *just* ask for AHs because they're more of a first year university standard. smile.gif So I don't know about them having less worth, maybe they're just perceived that way.

Rachel - Maybe they've changed the syllabus. ph34r.gif I wasn't completely au fait with it last year, but if it's any consolation, you're probably better at performing than me, and I still got a band 1 A overall, without having a clue what to do in the exam. (They changed the entire format last year - you should be fine this year. smile.gif)

Don't you be so silly; I bet you're just smashing at performing! smile.gif And you can sing......I reaaaally can't sing!
Ohh I think I better check up on that! I've never even heard of set works! ph34r.gif
So your paper was just your average tickbox, literacy, listening etc. listening paper? I'm sure I'll have done the paper at some point, but I don't really remember!
Miss Ross
No... I remember having to write 2 'essays' and starting to cry when I ran out of time. ph34r.gif Have you looked at last year's paper? It probably just seemed like a bigger deal to me cos I'd not seen anything like it before!
melody_maker
Ohh, is that like the last question where they play you two pieces of music and you have to write a short essay about them?
laura-clarinet
We've had listening drilled into us since March, and i'm really confident with t smile.gif

So how did everyone find the music papers today??
That's all my exams FINISHED!! ohmy.gif biggrin.gif
laura-clarinet

I thought the higher paper was okay yesterday...wasn't too sure about the 1st question though...it wasn't jazz-funk was it?! ph34r.gif
That's all my exams finished too biggrin.gif

Did the higher listening paper yesterday: was fine with some of it but confsued with other bits (listening isn't really a strong point of mine unfortunately sad.gif). Got REALLY confused on the last question because I just panic when I can't hear things that are similar, and the things that are different! Hopefully performing will have saved it for me smile.gif !

I did the advanced....I thought the grid question was tricky! But the literacy question went really well.
How have the other subjects been going, out of interest?

I sat the Advanced Higher Music exam. Practical was ok but the examiner wasn't very chatty. sad.gif i prefer if the talk a bit more laugh.gif

At AH you don't need to learn set piecs thoughout the year (I know they used to) Now, as a NAB, we need to write a dissertation on a comparison of two pieces (which i passed hurrah.gif ) I wrote mine on Mozarts clarinet concerto 2nd movement and Tartinis clarinet concertino 1st movement.

I thought the listening wasn't too bad, the prelim was harder and i was expecting somethiong like that again. The grid question was good and I managed to write a fair chunk on the last two questions smile.gif

Good luck to everyone waiting on results and i hope all your other exams went well smile.gif

I did my dissertation Milhaud's Flute sonatine, and Bach's Flute sonata in G minor.

The bach was awful to anylyse, coz there's so much to write about.

Practical went very well, and listening was easy.

There's only 3 of us that did AH this year. Myself, Stace-clarinet^^^^ and another girl

we split the morning up and made it into a proper performance. We all did our first instruments then we all did our 2nd.

The examiner was very quiet except fo a comment on my double clarinet and sax stand, he said " now that's a funky stand" wacko.gif
Miss Ross
When did the dissertation become a NAB?! ohmy.gif *envious*
melody_maker
Oh, was it not last year? ohmy.gif
I wrote about Rachmaninoff's 3rd Piano Concerto and Rachmaninoff's Variations on a Theme by Paganini! I enjoyed it. And we got a trip to Glasgow Mitchell Library to research it (allowing shopping time too ofcourse! wink.gif) Oh I'll miss AHMusic! sad.gif
