Playing, listening to etc

I went to London last week to hear the royal philharmonic play.

They did Ralph Vaughan Williams' Lark Ascending.

It's all I've been listening to since.

I love it so much wub.gif

sadly I don't play the violin. the whole thing is beautiful though.

Prokofiev's Toccata.

Can't play it but could listen to it all day wub.gif wub.gif

I've just started to learn it (it's not very difficult) - it's so pretty! biggrin.gif

Well eveyone to their own taste. I cannot at all enjoy 'the Lark'. But I love Shelley's Toccata by Prokofiev.
At the moment I can't stop listening to any Bach played by Angela Hewitt.

My parents can't stand 'the Lark' either, I'll have a listen to Shelley's Toccata smile.gif

I was there too smile.gif I absolutely adore the Lark wub.gif wub.gif wub.gif

I've just fallen in love with Walton's Troilus and Cressida

Whereabouts were you?

I was in the cheapy seats, right at the back rolleyes.gif

You can still hear it as well. I don't mind, my parents buy me better seats for things I really really want to see. Like when James Galway was performing. THAT was good. Didn't think much of the piece he did though.

Just today, this live version of Voodoo made me listen to the album version in a completely different way.

At the front on the left hand side as you look at the stage, the seats just before the choir benches.

Cool. Probably didn't see you then. But still cool to think that someone else from the board was there smile.gif

I'm loving Sibelius' violin concerto at the moment. In fact I'm loving all violin music at the moment.
Maizie
Bigaglia Sonata in A minor (for recorder, unsurprisingly!) I've been really enjoying learning to play it, and then at my last lesson my teacher played the piano-part on guitar and it was just brilliant. Yes, I have a recording of it with a proper harpsichord and basso continuo, but actually playing it with another person made me love it lots and lots and lots more.

Saaame about the Faure! (Sorry, don't know how to add the accent)

I'm doing that for my grade 5 flute, and it's my ultimate favourite piece I've ever learnt. I can't wait to be able to play Fantasie when I'm grade 8. I have to confess, I've already bought the sheet music, ready for when I can play it, to spur me on blush.gif . Can't wait... rolleyes.gif

smile.gif I've been learning the piano accompaniment for Gedall40...we're playing it at the Leeds event on Saturday. It's a lovely piece. smile.gif

Good luck for your grade 5! party1.gif

Thanks! I love the piano accompaniment too, and luckily so do my music teachers at school, they've played it enough times for me in assembly/performance classes rolleyes.gif

And thanks for the e accent help. It'll help a lot in my disastrous french lessons smile.gif

I agree!!! It is really hard to bring off well and very emotionally tiring... but so enjoyable when you get it right!! I don't think I've ever spent so much time practising a piece! I can just spend hours practising it completely losing track of time and having to remind myself at some point that I need to eat and sleep!!!!
I haven't played any others in the Kinderszenen but will check them out and if they are as nice as this one will defintely consider learning some others too!!! wub.gif

I seem to fall in love with most of the music we play at orchestra, but two stand-outs for me this year have been Stravinsky's Petrushka and Panufnik Sinfonia Sacra. I think I possibly love them both more because I really disliked both when we started them, but I really love both now.
Also, spent this last weekend playing Mahler's 1st symphony, which is amazing, especially the 3rd movement... ooh, I might have to go and listen to it again now biggrin.gif

It's TG, Misterioso. And the Fantasie is Grade 8, rather surprisingly in my opinion, as I think it's harder than most Grade 8 choices.

Yeah, I use TG for flute. But ABRSM for piano.

I was going to wait until some people had put something that wasn't classical, but (not having read all the posts) I haven't seen any, so I'll just admit that this week I've fallen in love with Eva Cassidy, and have asked for two books of her arrangements for my birthday.

For a classical singer, somehow classical music doesn't really get to me. I need to try and remedy that ASAP, I feel so... uncultured!
Solari
Lorie Line's arrangement of "Winter Light" by Zbigniew Preisner (from "The Secret Garden". I'm really pushing myself learning to play it as there's lots of ties and some difficult (for me) fingering, much more interesting than the grade pieces I'm studying biggrin.gif A truly beautiful piece of music.

This talented lady plays it fantastically: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TDY3Qplaps

Lorie Line's arrangement of "Castle on a Cloud" from Les Miserables is also fantastic, although that might be a bit ambitious for me right now. I'll give it a go sometime soon smile.gif

I'm constantly falling in love with new stuff. This week it's Mahler 5. smile.gif

My Trio and I are currently working on Rachmaninov's Elegiaque Trio in G minor. I had never heard it before. (or probably had but not paid it much attention ph34r.gif ).. Anyway am completely in love with it now
