Actually it sounds like you did really well... it is grade 8 after all! (what is it with E flat this term? )

Grade 8 sounds mind-numbingly complicated and difficult to me and because you've only been learning since September I would say it's a huge achievement for you. I'm a little in awe of what's required at that stage for things like the scales, aural and sight-reading.

And sight-singing???? Is that new? I don't remember that from 20 years ago! I would never be able to do that!


When I started violin nearly three years ago I thought I would be aiming for grade 8 but life-events seem to have taken over so I may never get there... but the sound of double-stopped scales and mixed chords in alto and treble clef are soooooo scary .... I can't see me ever getting that far with viola for sure!


But really well done - did you celebrate??? Wonder when we get our results!!!

Seriously though, I'm not aiming for grade 8 as such, but I am aiming to be able to play that Glazunov! It's my all time fave viola piece and I just love it and sing it quite often! I've even got the music for it and play around with a bar or six here and there. Oddly enough, since doing a flat key or two, I haven't touched it and it's in a flat key, (can't remember which, but it might even be Eb... )

What grade was yours again Lottie?

Well done all exam survivors anyway. I'll think about that again when we're back from Taiwan and re-settled, including finding new teacher.

lottie - the scales are daunting but they are exactly the same as the violin ones just a 5th lower. Sight singing, I don't know if it's new and you WILL be able to do it, i think it starts at grade 4, just singing notes in your own time within the range of a 3rd above and below the starting note, and then by grade 8 you sing one line whilst the examiner plays another. Double stopped scales are horrendous, and I'm sure you will get to grade 8 one day, just don't give up! It did take me 9 years to get to grade 8 violin. I hope the results will be in soo, end of term (10th) is optimistic and then i go to kenya for 2 weeks, so they should be here by the time I get back.

elisabeth - I'm not a whizz kid at all, as I said it took me 9 years to get to grade 8 violin, and that was 2 years ago. As for the glazunov, the first and last sections are in Bb and the middle in Eb (i think).

I seem to recall my teacher wondering if the Glazunov was actually in D minor or something as we were looking at the music and the often telltale finish note, but I can't remember clearly now. Anyway, would love to hear you play it. 9 years to get to grade 8 is a good rate. I'll take 2-3 times that long, but, no worries, it doesn't constitute whizz kid.

Just got my result - 135 for grade 8 viola.

Absolutely over the moon, I definitately didn't think I'd get a distinction!

No I don't have my results yet but my teacher is on holiday. I'll send her a text this afternoon but if the result was good I'm sure she would have been in touch straight away. I know I've not got a distinction this time though.

My results came through last night....




.... 131 - distinction! (grade 3 viola.. I know, it's only a baby exam but it was still scary!)


I honesly don't know how I managed it after messing up that scale


Off to celebrate with a nice cappuccino for breakfast

Well done to everyone, that's brilliant results
I was too terrified to post that I was going to do my Grade 5 Violin exam as I really thought I would fail...
but I passed I nearly fell off my chair when the mark sheet said 94/100!! Full marks for one of my pieces and also the supporting tests just a couple of marks of the other pieces
I had another exam on the same day, so really couldn't believe my luck!

Well done lottie that is a FANTASTIC result!
