Any help greatly appreciated.

How come you don't have a copy if you are meant to know the key?

It's 3 flats, and first few bars seem to be minor. Also last note of all is a bottom C, so I would say definitely its in C Minor.

I do have a copy but i cant decide whether it's E flat major, C minor, or F dorian.

I see what you mean about F Dorian, but I think if you get asked the question I expect the examiner would expect you to answer a conventional key. I think the evidence is greatest for C Minor ! Of course you could just waffle and explain your thinking. !!

It looks like an Eb to me

I'll say C minor, but also talk about the possibility for it to be F Dorian.
Thanks Evryone.

I've just listened to a recording on YouTube - the opening phrase certainly sounds F minorish (so not being an expert on modes I guess that's the F Dorian) but much of it doesn't have a strong tonal centre at all, apart from some (mostly Eb) major passages - and the last bass note is definitely an Eb. The only C minor bit is really the second bar of the theme but without any obvious signs of "standard" C minor such as B naturals....

Oops, I misread that bottom note at the end , it is indeed an E Flat. This tends to make me alter my opinion to E flat as the key. Now were really confusing pianocellosaxboy !

It seems to me to be loosely in Eb major, but without any real tonal harmonic progression to define the key that I can hear. But, yeah, Eb is definitely the 'tonic'.

Hi all,

Thanks for your help, in the end i wrote about how it could have been any three, but after checking the last note i said it is most likely in e flat major, that should do for the examiner i hope.
