Hi all,

I am getting a new cello bow soon, and have only ever had the bow that came with my cello. I am working on grade 7 and 8 stuff.
What should i look for in a new bow, and what would be the best way to try a new bow out?

I'm a bit clueless when it comes to this, any help would be greatly received.

Take your 'cello with you and try out a number of bows on your instrument. You'll be surprised at how different they can feel. Some people prefer a heavier bow to a lighter bow or vice versa. Some people like to use different bows when playing different pieces. Just like choosing your 'cello it can be very subjective.

Very basic things to consider are that : the stick is straight and balanced; that it has no repairs; that it is properly haired and that the adjuster works properly.

There are a few dealers who will send out a few bows on approval for a week or more, if you want to try them at home at your leisure. 'Cello bow approval' in Google brings up a few and there's also one in Bristol. It might be worth phoning rather than doing it online to discuss the price range and what you are looking for in a bow. Also, some sites have tips for choosing a bow.
