It's a bit cheaty to include letters which have been superseded by higher attainment is it not?

Agreed. But some of my licentiate diplomas are in different instruments/disciplines.

On my business cards, letterheads and teaching related e-mail signature I state BA (Hons) FVCM (Hons), but I did a few other ones which were pre-requisites.

BA (Hons) Music University of Liverpool - with final performance on Flute. This is the one I'm most proud of. We had to do lots of history and analysis which I didn't like at the time, but I value them now as I feel I have an all round understanding of music.

Advanced Certificate in Flute - this was the post Grade 8 certificate - has this been replaced by DipABRSM? If so, can I put those letters after my name too?

AVCM (Hons) Associate of Victoria College of Music on Electronic Keyboard
LVCM TD (Hons) Licentiate of Victoria College of Music in Keyboard - Teaching Diploma

At the time I'm not sure if Trinity Guildhall were offering keyboard exams. They were definitely worth doing and I learned a lot, but the downside is that not many people have heard of the Victoria College of Music, still I'm glad to be sharing some letters with Mr Barton!

FVCM (Hons) Fellowship of the Victoria College of Music in Flute Performance- you're supposed to do the diploma's in the same subject, but it's a relatively small college and they liked me so I got special dispensation to do this one on a different instrument.

I'm enrolled for CT ABRSM starting in the autumn which I'm looking forward to.

Lots of us have heard of it but choose not to use it. LLCM offer diplomas in keyboard. I am not sure if any of the other boards do.

Having compared the syllabuses between TG and VCM I can see why lots of people don't use them. I'll have to investigate LLCM!

I had a pupil come from another teacher who was ARAM. I'm not sure what it is as everyone said she had no teaching qualification.

ARAM = Associate of the Royal Academy of Music. It's awarded to former students of that institution who have made a significant contribution to the music profession............

ARAM is Associate of The Royal Academy of Music. (In the days before DipABRSM, LRSM, FRSM.) Hence mine is ARCM - Associate of The Royal College of Music.
Martin Clarke
BA (Hons): music degree from Durham
PhD: doctorate in music from Durham
ARCO: Associate of the Royal College of Organists
DipABRSM: ABRSM Diploma in Principles of Piano Teaching

The first two are academic qualifications, rather than relating to peformance or teaching based activities. I use them all on exam entries, but otherwise mainly emphasise the DipABRSM when advertising for new pupils; I found it a really worthwhile qualification - preparing for it made me think in lots of new ways about my teaching habits.

Very best of luck! Which instrument? The exam was actually a positive experience - the viva was really quite enjoyable, as the two examiners seemed to genuinely want a conversation about good teaching methods.

Same for me (though the exam is next month!)

Good luck, David - let us know how you get on!
