Have just found, on Andy Scott's website, that this year's Royal Northern College Sax Day is on Sunday 15th November, all day, at the RNCM's premises in Manchester.

I shall once again be there biggrin.gif

Sign in here if you will be there biggrin.gif

Cool biggrin.gif

This event has become one of my musical highlights of the year, and if they can get someone as good as Otis Murphy (who was there in '08) to do the final recital, I'll be one very happy barry-clari. biggrin.gif

I don't think you'll be disappointed, Barry. I've heard rumours.....

Interested in this, do you have to be any sort of level on sax?

If you can get a few notes, there'll be something there for you Nicia. I think you'd thoroughly enjoy the event. smile.gif

Excellent! My pupils are very excited. Also, is anyone going to the RNCM/BASBWE wind weekend on 24th/25th October? It's going to be a great weekend (and I'm not just saying that because my band's playing!).

You'll spot him easy enough he'll be the one being nagged by my daughter.

I saw Vincent David giving a masterclass and performance at a Selmer sponsored day at Trinity about 5 years ago. He was amazing.

I've also seen the Simon Willescroft quintet (aka Elliott Henshaw band) on a few occasions, although only once with Simon playing - again it will be something to look forward to.

I'm not at all sure I'm going to make it up this year though, I think it's likely I'll have a big band gig in London the night before.

That's a shame sad.gif

Full programme now on the website yay.gif guess I'd better book my tickets... biggrin.gif
barry-clari
As with the Colchester single reed day earlier in the year, I'll see if we can have a forum meet-up at some stage during the day smile.gif
barry-clari
As I'm pulling various November events threads out of the forum today, thought I'd do the same for this biggrin.gif

Reading through the thread, it looks like me, emsoboe, Clare1986, hillyb and Kate from the forum attending, any advance on that? smile.gif

I'm thinking of going. I will see if I can get a few friends together to make the travelling easier. Is it one of those events that you need to book well in advance for do you think?

You shouldn't have to book too far in advance at all, judging by previous years : certainly if you can book during the course of the next several weeks, I think you'll easily get yourself and your friends in. smile.gif

Hopefully, see you there! biggrin.gif

I'd like to go to this event at some point but have just booked in for the Nottingham sax event in March 2010. It used to be called Nottingham saxday, but next year it's an entire weekend...bliss! (Friday to sunday). Tutors are Northern sax quartet, James Rae and Nicola Pennill, promises to be fab!

Re the RNCM saxday is it enjoyable for all levels of player? e.g beginners right up to diploma standard?

Can anyone tell me a bit more about how the day is structured?

thanks

Yes, sure smile.gif

It caters for anyone from, I'd say, about grade 3ish up to diploma standard. There are various playing and listening sessions, including what is invariably an excellent evening concert : this year it includes Simon Willescroft and Vincent David.

The leaders of the various sessions are drawn from the Royal Northern's teaching staff, including Rob Buckland and Andy Scott (each year, Andy does a Sax Assault playing session, which is always well worth getting involved with biggrin.gif ).

The day always starts (9:30am) with a massed saxophone choir, which everyone is welcome to play in.

I think you'd enjoy it saxgirl : hope to see you there! biggrin.gif

Yeh I have; took a pupil before! She was only Grade 2ish at the time and really enjoyed it. Hoping to persuade my grade 7s and 8s to go but they're typical teenagers so it's a challenge!

We will have to chat Appassionata. All the playing sessions are done and dusted by about 5:30pm-ish if that helps in getting a more decent train back.

I've been a couple of times before and I know a good friend of mine is planning to go this year. From my experience anything Rob and Andy are involved in pulling together will be fabulous for anyone who enjoys saxophones. I don't think I can make it this year but I have no doubt (and am looking forward to) a minute by minute report back.

I've just found out that the event I thought was the Saturday night before the sax day is actually a couple of weeks later this year, so I might be able to go after all!

Oh, thank you! It would be a good deal better if I were to do it again now though, my playing's progressed a lot over the last couple of years.

In fact, if I do go I suspect I'd tend to go to the classical and masterclass sessions rather than the jazz playing sessions. I do a lot of jazz anyway, get to play in a couple of groups and have excellent tuition. I do almost no classical playing (and don't envisage doing any unless I find a way of earning a living without the day job), but I do know that I have learnt a lot about both saxophone technique and general musicality from the lessons / masterclasses / courses I've attended with a primarily classical focus and that's not something I have regular access to.

sad.gif No way I can go, and it looks so good, too! Train times (because of it being on a Sunday) mean I would have to travel the night before (and sleep on Piccadilly station). First train from my neck of the woods on a Sunday wouldn't get into Manchester before midday. Sigh....
nickjones8
Can't go - York teaching commitments, and already-purchased train tickets rule it out.
