Hi all,

What would you say is a reasonable tempo for this piece as it has the performance deirection of Allegro molto e con brio.
Would a crotechet = 140 be ok?

Many thanks

My Augeners edition shows minim = 69, BUT, it could be a dotted minim. My edition is well over 100 years old and there seems to be a small dot after the minim symbal. It could just be a mark on the paper, I'd be interested to know myself if anyone can confirm.

Edited from earlier post which I deleted 'cos it was a load of mathematical twaddle sad.gif

My recording of Bernard Roberts on Nimbus takes 5 min 57 (inc the repeat) for 388 bars which is 65 bars/min (or dotted minims) or 195 crotchets/ min, (so 140 crotchets is very slow.) Oldnotes edition probably is dotted minim = 69, a touch faster.
I play it a bit quicker than that , about 75 bars per minute.

Thanks - obviously a dotted minim then

I assum you're just asking about the first mov't?

Yes I am just on about the first movement, it does seem 140 is a bit slow I will have to work on speeding this up. Thanks all.

Well...I've had a little play, and I can get it to 184 crotchets. Do you think this would be a good enough tempo for a first performance of this in a school concert?
fsharpminor
Yes I think that would sound OK

I do have another couple of weeks, so may be able to get it up to the exact tempo, surprisingly it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be to get it up to that speed.

A tempo of around crotchet = 180 or even just over would be fine. Good luck in your preparation! piano.gif
