Full Version: Training Options Discussion
Forums > ABRSM > Teachers
MusicSong
In light of all people taking other threads off topic, I though I would create one especially for the discussion of qualifications.

I anticipate this could get messy because of it beign a discussion. This is your dedicated thread! I am starting this is line with the ABRSM Forum Rules- so no persoanl attacks etc. We are all grown ups here. If it gets offensive i will report it.

So there appear to be four routes.
Music degree at a college or university BMus, BA, B.ed
ABRSM grades/diplomas
ABRSM teaching Dip and CTABRSM
No training but lots of experience

To start off... Do people like Trinity Guildhall exams? (I have seen them referred to as a softer option to ABRSM.

Does a degree train you for teaching?

Re: Degree

It depends on the course! My course did not include such training. However, I did other extra things in college which contributed to my ending up where I am now.

If you take an instrumental degree, there would be some pedagogical training included. The amount is probably up to what courses you choose.

Were they extra things thrugh the college or things that you initiated?

I think that in the end, what matters about qualifications, is what you want out of them and as a result, what you get out of them. All my qualifications relate directly to things I've been involved in, whether that be drama, music, church music etc. In the end, what matters is what people take from their studies and how they apply this in 'real life.' I know that everything I have studied has furthered my own knowledge and enriched my ability to carry out the various related tasks.
