There's a great video of Diana Damrau singing this aria. Yeah it's certainly an interesting piece.

Went to see Scottish opera perfol "Italian Girl in Algiers".

It was fantastic...although strangely done. It took place on the set of a soap opera. There was a green background, and a large screen was placed so everyone could see it. The singers stood in front of the green background, while computer animation was used to creat a "real" background on the screen.

The singer stood in front of the background when their character was "acting" and stood to the front of the stae when they were not.

It was very well done and very easy to follow since it was the first opera I've seen a theatre!!! I finally got around to going biggrin.gif

Amazing voices too!

Final trio from Rosenkavalier would be my pick. Definitely my favourite Opera. Peter Grimes would be another.
Also, the act 2 duet from Traviata between Violetta and Germont Pere. I HAVE to sing that some day! And Yeletski's aria from Queen of Spades. So so beautiful.

You will need them! I saw the general rehearsal on Friday, and it was amazing! I was a blubbering wreck. The lady singing the Marschallin, I think she is Finnish, has the most beautiful voice. It's heartbreaking. ;(

I really hope you enjoy it! I would love to see it again.

That's interesting. I was thinking about going but was rather put off when I read in the reviews in the paper that that was how it was being performed. It just sounded all rather gimmicky to me, but you say it worked well - I'm glad! Musically, L'Italiana in Algeri is not one of my favourite operas anyway, though I do like that Isabella is a strong, intelligent woman who doesn't allow herself to be walked over and ends up triumphing in the end - something that's not particularly common in Opera!
