Hi this a very simple question, I am reviseing for my theory grade 2 and I want to know if there are any differances between common time written as a c and the same symbal with a line through it from top to bottom. Is it just a different way of writing the symbal or does it mean something else.
Thanks

the c sign with a line through it means that the time is 2/2 so all the notes are worth half of what they are written so a crothcet would be half a beat and a semi breve would be 2 beats.
hope that helps and i havn't con fused you too much blink.gif

C without a line is the same as 4/4 time (4 crotchet (quater note) beats to the bar)
With a line through is means 2/2 time (2 minim (half note) beats to the bar)
I know they add up the same which doesn't help.
2/2 time would probably indicate that it is faster ( saves on writing and reading all the short value notes.)

Hello,

Common time written as just "C" means the same as 4/4, When it is written with a line through it, it is the same as 2/4.

Hope this Helps!!

Good Luck!

the c stands 4 common time (4/4) and the c with a line through it means half common time (2/2 - i think)

Hello Sarah

'C' means 4 crotchet beats per bar, but 'C' with a line through it means 2 minim beats per bar, which is not quite the same thing!

Good luck.

Rosemary.

I am a mere beginner - but remembering back to school recorder days - I reckon the C is common time ie 4/4 - 4 crotchet beats in a bar, and C with a line through it is 'cut common' which is 2/2 which is 2 minim beats in a bar.

I may be wrong though! I am sure someone will correct me if I am! wink.gif

Oh for god sakes:

C is 4/4
C with a line through is 2/2
As you can imagine, 2/2 sounds the same as 4/4, which also sounds the same as 8/8.

The difference is all based through the rhythm. With 2 minims to a bar, you would use 2/2. With 4 crotchets, 4/4. If you are using 8 quavers, you'll be using 8/8, but if you are only using the occasional quaver is a prodeminately crochet based piece, you'll use 4/4.

Yep - its referred to as cut common time for obvious reasons and is there fore half 4/4 = 2/2.

Where 4/4 = 4 crotchets, 2/2 = 2 minims (and thus as a rule of thumb twice as fast......), in the same way that 3/2 = 3 minims per bar.

OK?
