Hey there,

I wanted to post this in the 'teachers' section since I wanted the advice of those who are maybe a little more experienced than a student - although I am not a teacher myself, I hope thats ok!

I'm looking at taking a BMus in september. I've been accepted at Canterbury Christ Church and also at the London Center for Contemporary Music. I'm a drumkit player and this is mainly the source of my dilema!! I have a big background in listening to orchestral music which I absolutely adore and want to study more of. I want to study musicology, pre-1900 music history and musical criticism. The trouble is, is that Canterbury doesnt have the best facilities for a kit player and it'd be really hard to practice. I want to play many genres, but my main playing background is in contemporary popular music (as with many drumkit players). I want to keep my playing fairly contemporary in that sense as I want to drum in that side of the music industy, however I want to compose in the classical side of the industry and I'm a bit torn with what to go for!!

It seems that if I go to LCCM I'll sacrifice a lot of academic study, although in the 'hands on' sense it'll be way more useful (since you learn about Music Business etc, which bores the artistic side of me but I guess its fairly helpful) but if I go to Canterbury I'll sacrifice the playing side of things.

Does anyone have any insights they can give about the nature of music at university or at music college, or any kind of advice which may be useful? Anything you can share would be extremely valuable and very welcome

Thanks lots for reading

Hi Chris,

Did you research your courses and Unis properly before applying? It sounds to me as though you haven't actually found the ideal course for your needs.

Is it just the lack of suitable practice facilities at Canterbury that's worrying you. If so, that's something you can take up with the department to ensure your needs are accommodated. If they've accepted you I'm sure they'll be only to willing to hear your concerns. Just phone the department and see what they have to say. If close enough, go back and visit. ...SOON!

Good Luck
