Overall a good day I think. Really nice to meet up with Barry, sbhoa, clarimoo, hillyb and a couple of other people who's forum identities I didn't quite work out. blush.gif

Babybird2 on 2nd flute, Carl on bass clari, rachi and tooty on the back row of the clarinets smile.gif

The oboist I was sat with is taught by the same person as me - so was good to get to meet her and a couple of other people she'd come across the penines with. Our teacher has been saying for a few weeks that she is going to get us together to play some trios so was really good to finally meet her!! biggrin.gif

I really, really enjoyed the morning - excellent music, loved the Paul Harris piece, the final morning piece was fast and quite difficult (grade 7/8 but went up to top G ohmy.gif , even for grade 8 you only go up to F#!). But by the end of of that my lip was beginning to go. We then started the afternoon with 2 very fast pieces, the first had lots of fast staccato semi quavers, which at that point of the proceedings was too much for my embouchure to manage even though the notes themselves were ok. As a result of that the lady next to me chose to sit out the next piece, as she was just blowing raspberries down her reed. Rather than balancing with something a bit slower we then had a piece which was just as fast and had an excessively difficult post grade 8 standard oboe part. At this point it began to feel more like an endurance trial than fun...and I really didn't enjoy that session at all, I think I would have been better sitting it out.

Was a definite relief to get to the final piece which was much easier and gentler. smile.gif

Overall, the difficulty level of the pieces was higher in Manchester than in London. I sat on 1st clari for most of the day, and there were some really quite difficult pieces (the Harlequin dances were easily post grade 8 for the 1st clarinets - really fun piece though biggrin.gif ). Perhaps, yes, one of those fast afternoon pieces should've been replaced by an easier number, though. Hope people appreciated me mouthing the number of bars rest laugh.gif

QUOTE

Was good fun overall though, really glad I went and would recommend it to people...though with a caveat for oboists regarding difficulty and stamina. It is adverstised for grade 5 and above....but the oboe parts were generally much too difficult for a grade 5 player to sight read , and for most pieces there was only 1 oboe part so no opportunity to swap. Maybe would have been better to advertise as 2 half days - with easier pieces in the morning, and the afternoon for more advanced.

I'll email Shea and let him know all your thoughts flobiano. smile.gif

I didn't go for the meal, so can't comment. I'm sure they will have had a good time though. smile.gif

We did. Curry Mile is great biggrin.gif

Was good to meet you flobiano (you're a very good oboist smile.gif ), and everyone else. I had a thoroughly good time, and the vibes I was getting is that this event will be reprised in Manchester this time next year, which is great biggrin.gif

For me, I did find it impossible in places! ( Harlequin Dances ) however, I did learn a lot from the conductor Keiron Anderson about the piece.
Many thanks to all that gave me advice and encouragement during the day. BTW the curry was fun as well.
See you all next time. R
Clarimoo
Yes, it was a good day. I enjoyed it enormously. biggrin.gif Well organised, great company, brilliant conductors, lovely venue. I paticularly enjoyed playing Verdi's Grand March from Aida and Faure's Pavane. It was so nice to meet up with people from here. clarinet.gif clarinet.gif Great fun, I do hope Shea does more of such days. Oh and my curry was nice too. biggrin.gif

Phew, sounds like a narrow escape for me....... biggrin.gif Maybe next year.

I think the music at this years London event were a bit easier than those at last years. It's possible I've just got better during the last year, but I was 3rd last year and 2nd this year so overall I think it was easier. I think quite a few feed back forms last year said it was too difficult - so I think they take it into account.

As to the idea of 2 half days - one easy(easier) and one difficult - I like the idea but for a lot of people it's a long way to go for half a day althought I guess they could listen in the other half. So if they get enough applicants and it does seem to be growing in popularity, maybe 2 seperate days an easy day and a hard day?

For me the best change would be to get the music in advance even if it was only a few days so it wasn't all sight reading.

For me I'd probably rather not.
I generally have enough to practice without adding anything else.
I don't mind something that may not be QUITE sight readable but that I can manage to learn in the space of a 45 minute session as was the case with most of the things we played on Saturday.

I think I agree with Sbhoa. There would also be practicality issues, such as relying on people to bring parts, then the chaos of finding the right seat on the day, as well as the increased administrative cost of posting the parts.

Yep, see your point, both of you smile.gif Even if they were emailed, it'd take an awfully long time, with potential for things to go wrong/people forgetting to bring music on the day etc...

Appassionata, I'll bring my Manchester pad to the Cardiff do, and you can have a look at it. smile.gif

Just seen this : yes, I think that's good biggrin.gif I've kept all the various pads since '08, and it's nice to look back on smile.gif

Glad you all enjoyed the meal.

I would be quite happy with that as well. For me as a ~Grade 6/7, with good sight reading skills, at least one of the pieces was so far beyond my level that I couldn't manage to get anywhere near it in 45 minutes. The others were just on that edge of being mostly manageable after the 45 minutes so were fine for me. But still only 3 out of the 6 that I felt I could actually play through without needing to skip bits. For the grade 5 oboist next to me, more pieces were in the "beyond" category which she found a bit frustrating. Maybe just having an alternative easier oboe part for the harder ones would have helped. smile.gif

But still was a very good day overall. Just a suggestion on how it could be even better maybe, or advertised at a more appropriate level. biggrin.gif

That sounds like a plan. smile.gif The flute parts were divided in two, and the clarinet parts into four, so I'll mention in my feedback email to Shea that perhaps two oboe parts would be a good idea. smile.gif
