Hi, I was looking forward to the East London Clarinet Choir Playday in the autumn, but they have just announced their Playdays for Jan 2010, so I guess there isn't one this autumn sad.gif

Still for those that are interested, based on this years playday I would highly recommend either of these days.

Saturday 23rd of January in London and
Saturday 30th January in Manchester

Full details aren't out yet just a brief notice on their website http://www.elclarinetchoir.co.uk/WOPD2010.html
Hope to see meet some of you there next year!

An event up north.... Good grief!!

Looks interesting and will keep an eye open for further details.

I was hoping there would be a September one too, as the last one was so good, and I emailed Shea to ask about it - turns out that the previous one made a significant loss because not enough people came, and he wasn't willing to risk it again..... sad.gif

But I shall certainly be at the London January one smile.gif

I'll definitely be at the London one (I doubt Teddington will clash), and I might consider the Manchester one too. These are excellent events, that I can highly recommend : the ELCC always get some big names in to conduct (eg James Rae, Paul Harris)

*makes note not to schedule the York playday on either of those two dates smile.gif *

Thanks for that info smd! smile.gif

Hopefully they will re-introduce it next year, As I guess it takes a few years to generate a following for these events.

I've added both these playdays to the 2010 calendar, making them the first events there! biggrin.gif

They are very good! They always have a good selection of woodwind 'names' conducting, eg James Rae, Paul Harris. smile.gif

Looks like they've added the tutors to the website : and both venues appear to have some excellent tutors! biggrin.gif

So that's decided : I'll be at both events as long as Teddington doesn't clash with the Manchester one. smile.gif

Will there be a list or something of instruments welcome to be involved? Is it all woodwinds or single reeds only?

All standard woodwinds will be welcome (flute, piccolo, oboe, cor anglais, clarinet, bass clarinet, all four main sizes of saxophone, bassoon). I *think* the minimum standard required is around about grade 4, but they'll have parts that will test out people who are post grade 8 standard too.

I'll reiterate : Shea and the East London Clarinet Choir put on really, really good events, and I'd urge you to go to one or both of these playdays! biggrin.gif

I think the mimimum standard they say is G5 - I went in Jan 2009 just before my G5 exam in March and was OK, but it depends on how good your sight reading is. blink.gif

It was a brilliant day though so I would highly recommend it.

It covers all woodwind (flute, piccolo, oboe family, clarinet family, saxophones, bassoon), not just clarinets, it happens to be organised by a clarinet choir. smile.gif

Basically, it's a grand sight reading day, with parts to keep anyone from grade 4-ish to post grade 8 happy. The names they get to direct read like a who's who of woodwind experts (James Rae, Paul Harris, Sarah Markham etc.), and Shea (the main person behind the playdays) is a very fine conductor/clari player in his own right. They are always brilliant events to go to, and we had around 7 forum people at the last London one.

Which one are you looking at coming to, the London or the Manchester one hothedgehog? smile.gif

There's a couple of Facebook event groups for the two playdays now online. I have said I'm attending both! smile.gif

Seems very early to be thinking about it, but definitely a possibility for us, though my good intentions to brush up my flute playing so that I could join in seem to have come to naught..... Daughter is keen to meet up with everyone in London again - just depends what else her busy schedule flings at her... I have put it in my diary.

This looks fantastic! I've never done anything like this before but I will be brave and say that I'll come to the Manchester one! *gulp*

I have my first oboe lesson next week so will see what standard she thinks I am - I have done grade 5 previously so think I should be at least back to where I was by then! And will be good motivation to have something booked in!

How many people do they usually have at these?

PS I can't find the facebook group at all - could you give me a clue what to search on? thanks smile.gif

This is the first time they've tried one in Manchester, but if it's the same size as the London ones (which is highly likely), expect around 100 attendees.

Looking forward to seeing you there flobiano! smile.gif On Facebook, put 'East London Clarinet Choir' in the search box, that will bring you to a link to their page. Click on there, then on the Manchester playday link. Then add your name to the list of attendees. smile.gif
