Does anyone know roughly how much it'll cost me to have some pegs fitted for my violin? I'll be buying the pegs myself beforehand so it'll be just for having them fitted. My current pegs are too small - they come out quite far through the other side!
I know the price depends on the shop i just want a kind of rough idea! smile.gif

In the region of £50 upwards for fitting only.
Boxwood would be more expensive, because the shaved area has to be treated after fitting to match the colour of the rest of the peg.
Why do you want to buy them yourself? If I was doing the job I would much prefer to fit pegs that I had bought in, to be sure of the quality.

Well, to put it in context, fitting a set of pegs so that they work really well and look nice takes about as much time as doing a routine service on a car, and requires more skill (I worked for a few years as a mechanic, so I speak from experience).
Would you baulk at paying £50 labour for a car service?

no no, it's only that I paid £70 for a FULL set up on my double bass which required over 4 hours work, I didn't imagine it could be similar just for pegs blush.gif

That's very good value.
I wasn't having a go at you personally by the way. I'm very aware that your job requires much more skill (and is far more worthwhile) than being able to either service a car or fit a set of fiddle pegs smile.gif .

laugh.gif don't worry, I didn't think you were having a go at me biggrin.gif and my job is of no more value than other jobs, they are all important, we need cars (in safe working order) and we need good violins to play on! laugh.gif

Crikey that's more than i expected. Well, kind of! I want boxwood pegs too dry.gif
Will have to wait a few months before getting that done...
I wouldn't have to leave my violin for more than a day would i? I couldn't blush.gif

I guess you will only know exactly by calling the shop, telling them what you want done and asking how long they have to keep your violin for. I know my regular shop would probably ask me to drop it off in the morning and pick it up in the afternoon.

You're right. I'll have to email smile.gif
As for the dropping it off in the morning and picking it up in the afternoon... i can't trust my violin shop to do that dry.gif Went to get the tailpiece changed on friday, i rang in the morning saying i'd be coming at about 10:30 and they were like yes thats fine, absolutely, should be able to do it in an hour, etc... Arrived and they said they were too busy and that i should come back the next day ohmy.gif But i couldnt. So they then asked me to come back at 5... but i couldnt so eventually they said come back at 2. Wandered around the city for 3 hours, went back at 2 and they hadn't even taken my violin up to the workshop! So i had to hang around even longer!!
Sorry that was a bit irrelevant just wanted to rant about it - even if they say that can do it in a day they'll probably change their mind once i've made the hour train journey to get there tongue.gif

I now realise how lucky I am to have a trusty shop near where I live!
Changing a tail piece only takes about 10 to 15 minutes (that's how long they did one in front of me once I was in the shop), sounds like a total nightmare to me too the day you experienced wacko.gif
