Hi all.
Today i tried defying gravity.
I know ive made a few mistakes (rhythmic, pitch and phrasing)
was wondering what people thought of it and could give me some pointers on what they thought of it on the whole for my next attempt!

Its not a song I've heard, but the obvious thing to me is there's lots of breathing going on - very short phrases.
Have a look through the text and see where breaths would come if you were to speak it, hopefully the musical phrases will fit the textual phrases.
Its probably down to the recording, but I have no idea what the song was about.

It's from the musical WICKED.
Here's another version here

Sorry Laura but the sound was not clear when I tried to listen to yours.

I think this was a really good attempt - it is such a difficult song with many complex rhythms - as you say, a few pitching errors but overall I thought you made a good solid sound which with a bit of tweaking would be even more effective. It is the kind of sound I hear when people come for a first lesson and I think to myself that a lot can be achieved in a short space of time and that by the end of the lesson, they'll hear a difference.

Hi Laura,
I had a listen and there were some nice bits.
You have two main issues you can work on - pitching and thickness of sound, here are some tips which you might find useful :
1) You seem to increase support and airflow when you go for high notes - don't do that - that's why your pitch is off up there.
2) There's a fair bit of tension in the voice at the end of phrases - this also causes pitching issues. Work on opening up the throat (ask your teacher for help with this)
3) At the end, you're kind of half belting, with fairly thick chords, but a thin fold / head voice volume and approach - not only is this difficult, it's also really dangerous - don't do it! You can't belt quietly, or timidly, nor can you belt just by singing loudly - you need to learn how to belt properly for the end of this song. It's no harder than any other voice quality - it just takes a bit of time to get used to it. Perfectly safe when done right.
4) I'd look up twang and learn how to apply it to your voice.
If you really want to sing this kind of rep - ask your teacher to teach you how to belt properly, or find a teacher who is competent in teaching belting.
However you decide to proceed, do keep working at it - I think there's a great potential in your voice and you clearly love the music you're singing, so you're a fair bit along the road already.
Good luck !

Laura, take my advice and get some regular lessons from a well qualified teacher locally. You have a decent voice there and you are obviously really keen to sing well.

I think that while we can offer tips and snippets of advice, we can't really teach you to sing!
