I see this mentioned a lot and have seen a complete edition on Amazon.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bach-Well-Tempered...4866&sr=8-1

I've been listening to quite a bit of Bach lately so I'm tempted to buy it but was wondering what sort of level most of the pieces in there are... is this something I should consider later on or would I be fine with some of it now for educational purposes (if so, is there a particular edition I should consider over the one above)?

Thanks!

If you have played little or no contrapuntal music, I think some would recommend that you start with the easier keyboard pieces and the two-part inventions. The WTC is probably in the main more akin to the higher grades, although the first prelude (in C) is approachable.

Thanks maggiemay, are there any easier volumes/particular pieces you'd recommend at all? smile.gif

The Anna-Magdalena book is as good as any, with a nice range of difficulty from about grade 2 up to perhaps 5 (although the Solo per il Cembalo on page 26 was set for grade 6 one year).

The 18 Little Preludes (AB publ) would also be good.

Yes I agree with Maggie, start with the easier ones she mentioned, then 2 part Inventions, then 3 part Inventions. With a few exceptions (eg Prelude 1 Book 1) WTC are generally not less than Grade 7, in fact most are Grade 8/Dip.
