Calling all more advanced clarinettists.

I have had it suggested that i learn to double tongue by my teacher.

I can just about do it slowly but surely that's defeating the object?????

Just wondering... as I know quite a few serious clarinettists who can't do it or don't use it.... how easy is it to learn to good effect and is it something that's really worth expending a lot of energy on???

Currently I'm working on the Malcolm Arnold Sonatina and the Weber Concertino and so far I feel I'm tounguing the necessary bits quick enough and certainly quicker than I can currently double tonge.

P.S. I am not seeking to undermine my teacher - he's great smile.gif - and I'll give it a go but just wondering what peoples balanced opinions are on this technique.

Thanks.

I very, very, very rarely use it Dawn : and I don't in the two pieces you mention.

It's a nice thing to be able to do, but I really wouldn't, in my opinion, get too concerned about it. smile.gif

Thankou Barry. Is it something that takes a while to master enough to be useful?

When would you use it?

Depends on the individual, but it certainly took me a long time...

For the most part, I can single tongue all but the most extreme pieces. If I have a lot of really, really rapid semiquavers or suchlike, I might consider double tonguing, but otherwise, I really very rarely use it Dawn. smile.gif

I'm pretty useless at double tonguing on any instrument.

I occaisionally use it on recorder but have never really used it on clarinet. I can single tongue faster than I can reliably double and have never had the patience (or real need) to practice it enough to make it a useful technique.

Just realised that this poll should have an abstain option on choice 2 and 3 .... for those who answer no to q1. Didn't realise that you couldn't leave a question unanswered. oops. blush.gif

can you edit a poll once it's posted???

How???
