I thought it would be useful to have a place to gather any threads about these exams and share any experiences/advice/help. I know there is a lot of general advice, but composing to order is quite a different animal and new I suspect to most of us!

I am finally knuckling down to have a go at one... will be an interesting challenge, and I hope it will spur me on to do more composition.

I'll add links to relevant threads as I find them... smile.gif

Anyone else having a go at these any time soon? Or able to offer advice or help?

Emsoboe started looking at one of these but it's not getting much attention at the moment. It's definately on the agenda at some point. We thought it might keep her in practice after GCSE and before A level.

At the moment she's concentrating more on G6 Theory.

I've decided to have a go at one, for fun, - probably just grade 2 to start with, just to see how I get on. I'm also revising grade 4 & 5 theory at present also to retake grade 5 theory in November, I did it probably 12 years ago or so first time round.

I've started looking at item 2 for grade 2; have decided to go with 'original melody' and have composed a tune to the words of 'Cats Sleep Anywhere' the Eleanor Farjeon poem. Currently am trying to compose a piano accompaniment, which I'm struggling with a bit, so am thinking I might re-jig the tune - or just revise grade 5 theory a bit more with regards to chords etc and then maybe I might get somewhere!

I also have the beginnings of a short piano piece for item 1, and yet to get hold of the grade 1 piano book for item 3 - although I'd love to arrange a piece for piano, clarinet & viola, so if there's anything in there that would lend itself to that then that's what I'll do.

I've been composing with pencil & paper at the piano, and using free download software 'LilyPond' to notate it.
