Hi,

Is it at all possible to study A Level Music as an evening course anywhere near Durham? I know plenty of schools round here do it, but obviously that would be during the day and I work full time 9-5 (even assuming they would be willing to allow me to join their classes). I just wonder if anyone knew of any courses or had any suggestions. I can go as far as Newcastle, Darlington or Middlesbrough.

I know a similar thread was started a while ago, but that ended up with information about courses in the South and I really need to know if there's anything local to me.

Thanks

Sorry to distract from this thread but.....

I was looking for the other thread on A level Music classes in the south. I'm having a problem using the search engine because every time I put in "A Level Music" it says it can't find the words. Please could someone either tell me what I am doing wrong or post a link to the other thread.

Thank you.

It does the same for me. I'm not sure the search thing is working properly at the moment though as the other day I was trying to find something that was only one word and also very commonly comes up (I can't remember exactly what it was but it was the equivalent of it failing to find any instances of piano! wacko.gif), but it came up with nothing.

I've found that the search doesn't work if the words you enter are too short - e.g. if you enter something like E string it doesn't work and so it's probably doing the same for A level.

Perhaps if you try putting 'level music' in it might work - I know it sounds daft, but it might be worth a try. laugh.gif

Hi,

Thanks for your interest everyone.

The thread I referred to about courses down south (Essex) is here: http://www.abrsm.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=22517&hl=

There's also another thread about courses in Manchester here: http://www.abrsm.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=26881&hl=

It really is a shame that more places don't do evening courses in A Level Music. But I guess there's not the demand. Most music evening courses seem to be music industry or music technology, or access courses. None of which is what I want. Trust me to want something that doesn't exist!

Hello

Have you considered contacting your local school/college/LEA as they will know the answer rather than poking about on the web?

I've contacted local colleges - none offer A Level Music (either full or part time). As I said in the original post, I know many schools around here do it, but as I work during the day I don't see the point in contacting them as, even if they were willing to let me join a class, it would surely be in the day time. I hadn't considered contacting the LEA to be honest, as I didn't really see what they would be able to offer, other than the school courses I couldn't attend.

I don't really think of posting on here as 'poking about on the web'. I was asking for advice from people who may have experience of doing A Level as an adult, or might know of a course running that I haven't heard of. Other than that, perhaps just a bit of advice as to what I might do?

Does it have to be an A-level? Grades VI to VIII (both theory and practical) are around the same standard as A-level, and I found that I could draw on much of the stuff covered in A-level music when I sat Grade VI theory.

Have you looked at any of the Open University courses, perhaps the DipMus?

You should go to one of the schools, and ask one of the music teachers biggrin.gif
I'm sure that you could ask about getting private evening classes from one of the teachers, and they should be able to submit you for an A-level.

If you can find an Access to Higher Education course, that would cover much the same ground as an A-level, and you're more likely to find that available evenings/weekends.
