A few months ago I managed to buy a lovely Yamaha Custom SEV Bb clarinet when the price was just over £1,000 rather than just under £2,000 as it seems to be now. On July 10th I managed a distiction in grade 2 and then, 11 days later, a merit in grade 3! Naturally I am feeling well chuffed, but think I would benefit with a 'classier' mouthpiece than the Yamaha 4C supplied with the instrument. Any recommendations?
I know you are all going to say that everyone is different and the way to choose a mouthpiece is to go to a shop and try loads of them. I am sure that is right, but SOME idea of what seems to be considered best would be helpful as there is so much choice out there. ie Selmer or Van Doren, 5VR or 5VRLyre? The choice appears to be endless.
PS I am interested in the traditional classical smooth sound rather than a bright jazz sound.
PPS Do we have a spell checker on these forums?

Selmer and Vandoren are both good makes. There is a lot to choosing a mouthpiece, and as you quite rightly say, what suits me may not necessarily suit you. Thinking of Vandoren, look at the B40, B45, 5RV, amongst others.
Congrats on the great results.
The 4C isn't the best mouthpiece in the world, rather better than the mouthpiece shaped objects they used to supply but there are much better ones out there.
I can't really add to what Barry has said. All of those are good standard mouthpieces. When trying new mouthpieces check the intonation of the throat notes - Yamaha clarinets have tendancies towards extreme sharpness, some mouthpieces make this easier to cope with than others.

Are there any particular types of mouthpieces that go well with a Buffet clarinet (E13)? I'm thinking about upgrading mine soon from the one that came with the instrument. I know a few people with Buffet's have mentioned they use Vandorens.

I think that the answer is that it's a personal thing and it's best if you can try several for yourself.

Depends on so many things. Not least what suits you, and what sort of sound you wish to make.

Do try a Vandoren - they are very good, and there are a few to choose from. I've always used them with my Buffets and like the range of sounds they produce.
