No other reason than for my own satisfaction, really. I'm not one for performing in front of other people

So that I can say I good at something and can show off at school events/ festivals. Also playing violin allows me to play in some famous venues like RAH and Cadogan Hall as well as to many foreigners on tour.
Also I like it becuase it gives me a reason to join an orchestra so I can meet new people as well as seeing others who have the same musical talents as me. So there is a social advantage to be a musican.

I joined the Cathedral choir as a treble when I was a kid and my love of music grew from that.

Because Music allows for much more expressing oneself than words often can do.

for me, its simple... it is and was an emotional outlet. it expresses things I can't in person. I'm not a emotional person, and i don't like talking about my feelings and myself, but when I'm playing the piano, singing or composing, it all comes out... I started at 11 because I was playing piano by ear at 3, and apparently my gryma suggested I learn piano... it took off from there, although my second teacher told me recently (we got back in contact recently) i freaked her out the first lesson becuase I told her I hated practise, adn didn't like piano... but now, I love both! So much so, I'm hoping to get my teaching deploma and pass on my love of music to others.

I note that another good thing about being a musican is you can visit top venues and play at them without having to shell out for an expensive ticket!

I love music because it arouses emotions in me like nothing else. It has the power to make me cry and feel ecstatic!
I hope one day I might be able to feel that emotion when I am good enough to play powerful, complex pieces of music.
I chose to learn the piano (as an adult) and for me I get so much pleasure and achievement from my progress (albeit not lightning quick) that it drives me on.
I love music and playing the piano!!!

Music comforts me, lifts my spirits. Every night I listen to soft music, as it regulates my heartbeat as I fall asleep.
Playing music is challenging but extremely fulfilling. As I tell my friends, live music is unbeatable, and I get to listen to live music everytime I play. Lucky me. And feeling the piano keys as I play is another level above pure listening: I feel the vibrations of the piano, the touch of the keys, and impact of the notes bouncing back into my face...

Because it somehow touches on an essential order of things without any reference to morality, history, philosophy or thought.… And all that can be in just one or two notes. Which means that even someone like me can hit it from time to time, for a fraction of a second, on my little soprano recorder…
Also, I wish I'd started younger as I'm sure it's good for "pullin' the birds"... as Michael Caine used to say!!!! ... (no, no, only joking).

Because I can relax whenever I start to play. It also helps me to express my feelings.

Because it was cool to join the orchestra - and I saw this older girl who was amazing at the flute, and I wanted to be just like her and one day be the leader of the wind band! I saw her again recently and she thought this was utterly hilarious!

I just like playing music because it's comforting to know I'm doing something that I'm good at and generally a lot better than everyone else at.

I started piano because my mum told me to and we had a huge and lovely grand piano at the time too

My first real band instrument I started to play was the saxophone. Alot of my friends played in the concert band and I only played recorder, so I took up sax as a social thing really.

Music for me has been an escape. At every major moment through my life I can think of a piece of music that I heard at the time and that’ll always stay with me. Music I also feel music opens peoples mind and helps people express themselves, just look at the blues, coming from a black African-American slave background it’s an expression of thought and feeling, but it also shares it with others.
At the end of the day music can help me cope, if I’ve had a bad day and listen to something heavy, it helps me release the anger, but if I listen to something nice and light, it helps relax me and forget the day’s issues. I’ve been a lover of music since a young age and always will be.
Music expresses me in so many ways, that I couldn’t with speech. I also love how music can bring down boundaries; it’s great when you start talking to someone new and share the same tastes, or find new ones.

I can't imagine not playing music. It was hard enough to more-or-less stop temporarily!
Started violin aged 7, piano at 10, flute at 13... don't seem to be able to stop LOL!

I have loved music as long as I can remember - it was always the highlight of every church service and every school day as far back as nursery. When life is not going well, music is a means of escape; when life is good, music enhances it.
As for why I play an instrument - the opportunity was there and I thought it would be exciting. I've never been more right about anything.

Feeling so in tune (no pun intended

) with both your own body and your instrument is nothing short of exhilarating. I am so blessed to be able to play music.

I agree with the above that playing is a level above listening. I find playing the piano extremely therapeutic. Sometimes I will look up at the clock and wonder how on Earth 5 hours passed so quickly!

playing piano allows me to do something solely for myself (certainly at this stage in my ability, that's no bad thing for others). It demands 100% attention and so all other issues / problems in life are not able to surface. It is escape to a place of beauty.

No reason other than it is an itch that must be scratched.
However, it is comforting to know that I have a sphere of competence separate from the day job so when management is being especially pillocky I can rise above the silliness.
