Was anybody at the recital by Dr Francis Jackson at York Minster this evening?

John Scott Whiteley introduced the recital, saying he thought it was going to be the most elderly recitalist performing in history. I understand Dr Jackson is 92 in October - he is an inspiration to us all to still be going VERY strong at this age!

His recital was world class, and I would more than confidently say he is the best cathedral organist in the country, if not the world. Predictions were that there were 400 plus people there. He played the Introduction, Pascaglia and Fugue in e minor by Healley Willan for his final piece, and this was followed by a standing evation of cheers and applause that I have never witnessed anything close to in my life. The look of pure joy on his face being surrounded by that volume of people applauding him will remain in my memory forever. It both looked and sounded asthough the absolute master of that beast was in charge tonight! When I left I was speachless.

Further comments welcome if anybody was there - I THOROUGHLY suggest if anyone gets the chance to get to any of Dr Jackson's recitals in the future to be certain to do so.

Yes, Tosher, I was, and I agree with all that you say about it !
I have been an admirer of Francis Jackson and his organ playing (and his compositions) for over fifty years.
After the inspirational performance last night I overheard the comment : 'He's a phenomenon'.
Certainly his technique, always amazing and powerful, seems to continue undiminished, as does his friendly and gracious manner. He has become a legend in his own lifetime. I do not know of any other international concert musician as old as Dr Jackson who is still performing public concerts/recitals. Long may he continue to delight us.
