Welcome to the forum.

Thank you

I did about 5 piano lessons when I was 13 and swiftly gave up because I didn't like the teacher. I messed about with keyboard for a while on and off in between but just really simple stuff. I tried taking lessons up about 10 years later but didn't really click with either of the teachers I found (perhaps it's me, not them!).

A couple of years on I've found a great teacher who pushed me through Grade 1 in a few months and has me lined up for Grade 3 in November so I'm definitely sticking at it this time tongue.gif

I started piano just before my sixth birthday and now 9 years later I have just done grade 7. I started the clarinet when I was 9 and progressed a lot more quickly because I could already read music and understood it, and I have just done grade 8.

Have I really been playing the piano for nine years? blink.gif Wow, time passes quickly. laugh.gif

I started piano when I was ten, got to grade five by 18...then gave up. I'm hoping to restart when my daughter has lessons from September.
macha
I started piano when I was nine and oboe when I was fourteen.

I started piano at 11 and have yet to start my other instruments... i'm not rich yet. wink.gif

I started showing signs of wanting to be a pianist just before I turned 7. Shortly after I turned 7 and had been picking out a few school hymn tunes through trial and error with my dad's guidance (and he doesn't even play the piano!) my mum suggested that I have lessons so as not to get into any bad habits... rolleyes.gif

I got a keyboard at 5/6 and learnt a few tunes with my dad's help. Taught myself to read music at about 8 and finally started violin lessons when I was 11. Slow starter. sad.gif

Started violin aged 7, also had some recorder lessons when a little older.

(Almost 24 years ago - argh! ph34r.gif)

Had two stabs at learning the violin, one aged 5 (presumably by the Suzuki method), then for one year in Year 4.
Learnt piano between ages 6 and 13 (never took any exams, but was working on Grade V pieces by the end).
Started recorder aged 7. (27 years ago!)

Started the piano at 6 or 7. Played for a year, then stopped.

Started the flute at 10. Played for a year, then stopped

Started singing lessons at 12. Sang for a year, then stopped.

Restarted flute at 13. Am still playing nearly two years later smile.gif

Restarted piano at 14. Am still playing nearly a year later smile.gif

I'm intending to carry on with both. Maybe I'll start singing again, you never know...
I'd love to learn the violin though, when I get to grade 8 flute my parents said I can. I really want at least one grade 1 certificate in something, because I've always skipped it sad.gif

Recorder lessons in years 3 and 4 in primary school (descant). When I got to secondary school I picked up recorders again, treble this time, and have since played descant, treble, tenor and bass in the recorder ensemble. (Also piano - for accompaniment!)
Started piano aged 8 and a half. Wow, have I really been playing for only 6 years? It feels like more, I can't remember a time when I didn't... 'cause I was probably too young. tongue.gif
I started clarinet aged 12 (year 8) and bassoon aged 13 (year 9).

I take it you managed to avoid orthodontics?

I started violin and recorder when I was 6, then piano when I was 8. A term later, I swapped violin for flute, then I gave up flute and recorder when I was about 10 and only played the piano for about 6 years. I restarted the recorder at 16 and took up the fiddle at 17 or 18. A year later, I'm still going stron with all 3 instruments and am contemplating buying a viola. biggrin.gif
hello_cello
when I was about 5/6 my grandad had a piano, and they live 4 houses away, so i spent a lot of time there, as he played, and i loved listening, then he showed me a book, and showed me middle C on the piano (which was a pianola i think) and from there, for a few weeks I basically taught myself, to about a grade one standard, but we moved away, and didn't have a piano, then about 6 years later, I started lessons, when i was 12, but had to stop for a year and a half, then resumed at around 14, here we are a year later, and im working on grade 5.

Unfortunately not. I got fixed braces (upper and lower) in the May half-term this year. (End of yr 9) So far I've managed OK, sometimes have to have a break after a lot of non-stop playing, but otherwise it's normally fine. My teachers understand this, which is helpful - they both have a lot of pupils with braces/retainers.

The orthodontists said it would be only 12-18 months of what they call 'having braces' (well I call it that too, but also 'torture' seems to fit tongue.gif), which apparently means 18. laugh.gif Only 15 months to go then...
CJB
Recorder at 6
Guitar at 9 (gave up after 2.5 years as my hands weren't big enough and I didn't enjoy it)
Clarinet just before my 11th birthday
Piano at 16 (not seriously and self taught due to lack of funds for lessons - given up and restarted more times than I care to list, currently given up due to lack of time/skill)
Flute at 23
Saxophone at 24.

Mixed in with all of these are other sizes of recorder, clarinet and flute. I've sung with varying degrees of enthusiasm as long as I can remember but haven't had lessons though am considering changing that.

I was 5 when I made my first squealy noises on the recorder...
false_harmonic
Eight and a half when I started formal lessons (violin), but have been singing as long as I remember (there are videos of me singing as a two year old and I have distinct memories of singing along to my Kylie tape at the age of three!) And my dad bought me a recorder when I was five and I attempted to teach myself from a book. I think I managed a few nursery rhymes!

To be fair, you probably did a better job than her back then tongue.gif

I had three piano lessons when I was 7. After which the lady decided that she would get married and give up teaching piano. (I used to go along with my brother and she taught me how to play clock patience while he was bashing the keys – I can still play, but that's all I learned)...

Then took up the recorder (an instrument I've always liked) at age 57, so am now learning about notes, scales, etc. and, hopefully, how not to make squeaks and duck noises… and thoroughly enjoying it.

Do I qualify for some sort of record for youngest learner seeing as I have a mental age of 3? tongue.gif

Depends on how old you are. I mean, if you're three then you'd be about average....

Glad it's not just me who appears to be decades behind everyone else.

37 in my case.

I like think of the time in the future, rather than anything lost in the past. Now that statement really does mark me out as OLD!

I was 47. I am an adult learner.
