It's been announced today that Bob Dylan is going to lend his voice to satellite navigation systems.

Which famous voices do you think would work well on sat-navs? I'll have a think of some ideas...

Anthony Hopkins.

And the late, great Richard Burton.

There are quite a number available on Tom Tom, can't remember them all but John Cleese is one of them.
Maybe he needs the money after his massive divorce payment ! Yopu can get Tom TOm voices with various regional accents as well.

I used to have a cassette tape (many years ago!) of Richard Burton reciting Dylan Thomas' poetry but it got stolen from my car sad.gif He could recite the sat-nav directions in verse tongue.gif

laugh.gif laugh.gif John Cleese I can just imagine! When you ignore where the Sat Nav tells you to go he'd be like Basil Fawlty shouting at Manuel laugh.gif
barry-clari
Jeremy Paxman might be quite an interesting one, I've just thought...

you could have Margeret Thatcher saying "turn right" and Tony Benn saying "turn left" ... tongue.gif

Actually, I hardly ever have the voice switched on on my satnav, it's far too annoying. Also, some words come out in a French accent for some reason. ohmy.gif

The answer my friend is...at the junction, turn left, then, you have reached your destination biggrin.gif

I think that mine would be a good choice. Lovely rich and deep baritone purrs. smile.gif

Perhaps Bryn Terfel Jones , if not.

I think if it was Richard Burton I'd be so busy listening to his voice, that I wouldn't necessarily pay attention to the instructions smile.gif

Bob Dylan would be cool, but might be too laid back - you can turn here if you want to, but if you don't, then hey, that's ok smile.gif

Some of the voices that read kids audio books would be good - David Tennant's great at this.

My sons like listening to the Tomtom in Rumanian, for some reason of their own which I suspect probably involves certain directions sounding like rude words. I'm sure they'll grow up sometime soon rolleyes.gif

We had victor meldrew on ours once

'I dont belieeeve it! you've missed the turn!'

Margaret Thatcher - "well you turn if you want to, but this sat-nav's not for turning" tongue.gif

About 25 years ago I was flying regularly with British Airways and they suddenly changed from using one of the stewardesses to make the safety announcement to using a recording. So if you were on a long trip, you heard it several times as planes had to touch down more frequently than they do now in order to refuel.

The voice they used then was that of Hannah Gordon, and as I was desperately in love with her (and Mrs Gerald knows this, so no chance of blackmail there biggrin.gif ) I would stop reading and always listened to her voice with a great silly smile on my face smile.gif . Needless to say I knew the words of the safety drill to a perfection.

So my answer would be that if I were to have a Satnav then it would have to be her voice to make sure that I followed the directions.

Alan Sugar is available as a sat-nav voice:

"OK, you've just entered the journey from hell. First prize, you arrive at your destination. Second prize, don't exist."

I'd quite like Tom Baker. smile.gif

I have Yoda, Boycie and Darth Vader voices on mine, but the novelty wears off quite quickly.

I don't have sat nav as I can map read, except when Gerald keeps talking to me at junctions mad.gif wacko.gif tongue.gif .
However, Frankie Howerd might be good, so if you got lost then at least you could laugh about it.
For sheer velvet smoothiness, it has to be James Mason's voice, far superior to any thing around today.
Sat Nav is not all it's meant to be though, ask Skylark about Anglesey rolleyes.gif laugh.gif

I plan the longest part of my journeys (motorways etc) by looking at a map, then use the sat-nav when I get more local to where I'm going. This is the best way to use them IMO smile.gif

Or katyjay, who found satnav incapable of identifying that she had actually reached home and parked on her drive when it was still telling her she was on the wrong side of the Thames!

I'd have Robert Stephens on mine. The most gorgeous voice of any actor I've seen. smile.gif

I saw him years ago in Private Lives with Maggie Smith, his wife in real life at that time.
