We use ear trainer for intervals. It is too hard for us really.
Plus we have fun with the piano keyboard, the leaf trombone, my favourite, and the drum kit.
What apps do other people find to be useful, or fun, or both.

I've recently acquired an iPod touch, which has a lot of the same applications, so I'll be watching this thread for recommendations with interest smile.gif

I don't have an iphone; can I get these apps on my computer - I've got itunes on it.

Edit: I've just tried to get some free apps (not paying for any until I know it works!!!). It's appeared in itunes as having been downloaded but it won't play on my computer - help!! Also where would I find the ear trainer and piano keyboard ones - the search facility doesn't seem very good and I'm not looking through over 200 pages for it.

I don't think any of them will play on your computer, it has to be an iTouch or an iPhone.
The app store is very very difficult to search as you point out which was one reason for my post. I'm hoping to share the gems I've found in exchange for other people's recommendations.
The iTouch and iPhone have touch screens and are motion sensitive. Plus one of the apps relies on your breathing in through the microphone. All apps I've seen rely on at least one of these features.

On my iPhone I have National Rail (I used it to track Matthew/Fionas rail journeys, see their thread) , Flight Track, ECB Cricket, iFooty, Stocks, Currency, Qype Radar (for hotels /restaurants), TV Guide, Sudoku, and a few more.

Thanks Dora - looks like I will have to miss out on this then - I have no intention of getting an ipod, I never listen to my mp3 player so am not likely to shell out for an ipod; an iphone is a possibility when my present phone contract expires. Shame they can't be played on computer. Why did it let me download it onto my computer if it won't let me play it on the computer? sad.gif

I don't have an iPhone, but one app I've seen that I'd like is a copy of a Real Book so you can select tunes and transpose them into any key. That would come in very useful.

I usually download to the computer and then it "syncs" with my iTouch and iPhone. You can also download directly to the iTouch and iPhone. I bought an iTouch to stop me buying an iPhone but when I came to get a phone the iPhone looked better than anything else around for me. I find it very easy to use and it does a heck of a lot.
I read on mine plus there is a tremendous range of games that appeal to mathematicians for very low prices. I met up with a friend's son and wanted to compare apps with him but he has an endless supply of gun apps which make the sounds of a gun loading and firing with screams added for extra entertainment together with pictures of the bullets being fired. We soon realised we were not on the same page.

I have an itouch. For beginners (as I am) I recommend:

iNote trainer- free or very cheap - Note recognition trainer (I have tried uite a few and I like this the best.)
Karajan Beginner - free - ear trainer (there is a pro version but it cost a little under £10 but looks comprehensive.)

Arundodonuts
Well I have the "usual suspects", Facebook and Ebay, Lotto (for lottery results) TVGuide, Google Earth, Torch - oh and Shotgun of course for those bad days in the office.

Google - with voice searches
Remote - remote control for your mac
Banner - displays rolling text like a matrix display (could be useful at traffic light!!)
WikiTap - a mobile Wikipedia
NetTV - Internet TV stations
FStream - Internet radio (including radio 3).
Shaksepeare - the complete plays, poems and sonnets.
Folders - for storing files on the iPhone and synching with the mac.
iDisk - to access files on my MobileMe account
Rightmove - to quickly check up on that des res I just drove past.
Skype - though it only works on Wifi connections and I don't know anyone else on Skype so it doesn't get used.

Musical stuff
iStrobosoft - an excellent strobe tuner from Petersons (who make "proper" hardware strobe tuners costing zillions). The mac version is about $50, the App is about £6. (NB NO GOOD FOR iPod Touch - it needs a mic).
Visual Metronome - lots of meter and rhythm options
TonePad - a mini Yamaha Tenori-on

A mate of mine has the SkyTV guide which enables him to set recording on the skybox remotely via the internet. Can't put the kettle on remotely though.

All in all, it's not bad for a phone.

Ear Training sounds good, I haven't tried any. Recommendations anyone?

I'm bringing this thread back to life to see if there are any new apps the kind folks on here recomend?

I was utterly surprised to receive an iPod touch for Christmas (I'd asked for the latest Harry Potter DVD). I've stuck a few free apps on it including various tools for getting me organised, a few games, a metronome and a keyboard.

For the more seasoned iPod and iPhone users out there what are the apps you can't live without?
miffy
Sonic,Peggle and Jewellquest!
Maps - so I can find the nearest Costa wherever I am!
YouTube and ITunes so I don't have to wait for that tune!
Not very highbrow I know!
And the Internet means I can get on here anytime I like
Email...
In fact I now have my whole life on here, previously a bit of a technophobe.., noe just me, my violin and my Iphone!

Did anyone join the 12 Days of Christmas give away?

A mixed bag of apps/videos etc, but it did include the animated version of Peter and the Wolf which I started to watch yesterday.

The one I use the most is Scrabble, but I do a bit of CM3, Lets Golf, Trivial Persuit (freebie on 3rd day Christams!), but the two I didn't pay for that came with the iPhone are Notes and Voice Memos and I use these all the time. Notes is very useful for lists etc and syncs with Mail for backup when plugged in. I also recorded my three little kids saying prayers and good night daddy and I use that when I'm away from home in some soul-less hotel and b and b. I'm aware this may have killed off the image you all have of me....

I spotted Peter and the Wolf just before midnight last night haven't watched it yet though. Played trivial persuit quite a bit and am currently getting let's golf (today's freebie)

I'm quite impressed with 2do lite and am thinking of upgrading to the full app.

Yes, a little irritating as I paid for Lets Golf last summer. Oh well, its only a bit of fun. I wonder what is in store for the last day!

AroundMe
Bejeweled 2
FML
Google Earth (not really that useful, but great to show off the phone)
Hachette Vins et Millésimes
iTunes 12 Days of Christmas
KanonDrum
Paper Toss
Ping (Free texting between iPhones anywhere in the world)
Remote
Shazam
Skype
Twitteriffic
Wapédia

These are my "must-haves" I reckon. If you want something fun and useless, try Balloons too.

Ooh a jolly good popular beat combo though.

Somehow I seem to have missed out on this 12 days of Christmas iPhone mullarkey. Obviously I ignored an email.

I loaded a few books, comics and short stories on my ipod touch for passing the time while traveling etc and I'm really impressed and surprised just how often I use it! It's actually a lot easier to read than I expected and some of the apps scroll automatically which is fun although I prefer 'swiping' the screen to turn a page.

I also have 'Things' which I can't live without - it's my 'to do' list and project info. Also the notebook - I even use it for shopping lists.

My favourite game is the one with the furry balls, called 'Fling' I think, which is quite a challenge at higher levels and I feel it stretches my brain cell. (yes I only have one)

I haven't tried any musical apps yet.

Oh and there's the 'bubble-wrap' one but I was bored within five minutes (much prefer real bubble-wrap) laugh.gif

I got an iPod touch unexpetedly for christmas and cannot believe how fantastic it is!! I hadn't thought about and ear trainer, but I'm looking for one now - there seem to be a couple of good ones. (I've found searching for apps on my iPod to be quite good actually - as soon as I typed in 'ear train' it came up with about 7 or 8 different apps).

So here is my list ... there are a lot!

BBC Reader
Sky News
TV Guide
Facebook
Flixster and book-movi.es
Instapaper (for saving web pages so you can view them off-line)
Shopping List
To Do's
Stick It (sticky notes that you can "stick" onto your 'home page' to remind you of things)
What to Expect (pregnancy companion)
iPr (pregnancy planner)
Amazon app
IKEA app
Hear Planet (gives descriptions and info about cities and places around the world - sort of like a guide to a destination)
Zara app (clothes shopping!)
AllRecipes (enter 1 main ingredient and how much time you have and it suggests recipes)
Toilet Finder
Wi-Fi Finder
ATM Hunter
Wikipedia
Dictionary/Thesaurus
Louvre (really incredible - has a range of items found at the Louvre and gives commentary and analysis of them!)
myHomework (assignment/deadline planner that I use for my open university course)
Shakespeare (complete works)
Audiobooks
iRelax (water and nature sounds)

Games:
Tap Farm
Oven Break (silly fun!)
Fling (the furry creatures puzzle that someone mentioned earlier)
Sneezies (addictive!)
Labyrinth (relies on the tilt of the screen)
Tap Tap (musical/rhythmical challenge to chart music)
Toobz (puzzle)

I've also added a movie to watch when I make a 36 hour journey next month (!) and I make quite a bit of use of the email, maps, calendar, contacts and music playing facitlities that come with the iTouch. I've just found as well, that if you go to the iTunes store and look under podcasts, you can download free comedy or informative video or audio podcasts to view when you want from the music player.

On top of that, I've seen a mini microphone that I'm going to purchase to attach to the iPod touch so that I can conduct interviews with it and store them digitally instead of carrying around my old dictophone (I write articles for some papers and magazines) and I suppose, thinking about it, I could record students/performances and play them back for analysis.

I'm so pleased I was given this and can't believe the amount of personalised use you can get from the combination of apps available!

Has anyone tried tvcatchup - apparently you can watch the tv freeview channels from your iphone. I've tried to download it and although I can download the application and log on, Safari won't let me download the channel. Has anyone else found this?

I haven't got any exciting Apps on my iTouch....Yet.

Just the usual/freebies:

Google Earth
Paper Toss
Sky News
Wild West Pinball
Nivelo
I would definitely recommend Karajan - it was one of the reasons I got the iPhone! (writing this post on the iPhone now smile.gif ). Aural is one of my weak points but my ear has definitely improved since I started using Karajan regularly.

laugh.gif Yes!!!! I also love DoodleJump, and Mahjong. On a more serious note, I also have Dog First Aid - hope I'll never have to use it though... sad.gif

One thing that's been incredibly useful to me is a text editor, which I use in connection with MobileMe, meaning I can edit texts on the go, and work out of the office to a limited extent (I'm a self-employed translator).

I love my iPhone wub.gif ... I can literally say it's changed my life smile.gif
