I've rediscovered my love for playing jazz recently and I'm considering doing some Jazz exams on the piano. I'm just about to take Grade 3 "classical" piano and am wondering what Grade of Jazz piano would be best to start with.

Any thoughts from you knowledgable people?

You would probably be best off starting at grade 1. The jazz grades do seem to be a bit more challenging than the classical ones for most people.

Hrm I'm debating doing this as well. Getting used to playing Jazz Rhythms just seems very useful if you want to play more contemporary stuff, not just Jazz.

I'm thinking of doing Grade 2 jazz piano in November. One of my pupils wants to do it and I thought if I took the exam before he does then I'll be able to tell him all about it. I've spent part of this afternoon listening to the Grade 2 CD to get an idea of what they expect of you regarding the improvisation part of the pieces.

Re the level - my pupil took Grade 5 classical at Easter but I wouldn't expect him to be able to cope with Grade 5 jazz. As for me, I've got a diploma but I'm still going to do Grade 2! biggrin.gif

I've been working with my teacher on a few jazz pieces on piano from the Pam Wedgewood book. I think it adds another dimension to your repetoire and certainly is a good way of developing your styles.

Are the Grades jazz books interesting?
