I'm wondering if anybody here apart from myself teaches jazz on the violin, to children adults or both. I've been doing it for a while now since taking the CTABRSM course, when I began experimenting with a system I developed as part of my final project - fortunately, it works! Less fortunately, though, there are no jazz Grade exams for violin and won't be for the forseeable future; it would be great for students to be able to measure their progress in that way and I suspect some of the parents would prefer it too.
Anyway, does anybody else here teach violin jazz and if so, how are you getting on with it? Do you find the absence of a set syllabus a hinderance in any way, or not? Have you managed to set up situations where your pupils can jam with a live band? (This is my next project!)
Anyway, I'd be interested to hear your news, views etc.
Incidentally as well as being classically trained I've been a jazz player for many years, hence my tendencies in this direction.
