Could anyone please help me with the fingering used for the first and second inversions of the arpeggios in Grade 8 piano? Is it the same as in the root position but without the root note, or does the hand move up so that the thumb starts on the third or fifth?

(I have ordered the scale book but it's going to take about a week to arrive!)

Thanks!!

Leave your hand in root position but just start with the necessary finger. So C Major, in 2nd inversion, just start on your third finger, and then it's just like playing a normal arpeggio. I found this the easiest way of playing them.

Play them whatever way is easiest for you. smile.gif

At first, I thought it would be easier just to play them with the same fingers as in root position because there'd be less remembering involved, but I found it much easier to start, for example, C major 1st inversion with a thumb than 2nd finger.

I've had a look in my (very old) scale book. The suggested fingering is to move your hand up, and start either 1-2-4 or 2-1-2 in RH for the first inversion and generally 1-2-4 for second inversion. Though there seems to be more variation in fingering over the different keys than there is in the root position.

But I would agree to do whichever suits you best and you find most comfortable. I have various annotations in my book where my teacher suggested different fingering to try so it probably is trial and error to find what works for you.

Good luck
