Full Version: Violin Diploma Repertoire?

Yes, yes, I know, I haven't passed Grade 8, but violin teacher is getting me working on diploma repertoire, as the reason I haven't sat grade 8 is because I am incapable of music theory...

So...I'm having a small problem in that it seems I only like music from a very restricted time period! (Romantic - early twentieth century)

Currently on my list of pieces I want to have in my programme:
Elgar sonata;
One of the Brahms sonatas (I really like the sonata in D, which is why I haven't picked a Brahms sonata - as that one is an FRSM piece!);
Smetana Aus der Heimat;
Kreisler's P&A.

Are we seeing the problem here?! I do like the Corelli, but that's arranged by Kreisler! I also got very excited when I saw that the Tartini was on the list, until I realised it was the wrong Tartini (why did he have to write two sonatas in the same key - it just got my hopes up!) and I therefore refuse to play it on principle!

Any suggestions to expand on the musical periods and what of the above not to play?! (A friend played P&A, Aus der Heimat and Beethoven, so I don't really want to do Beethoven as I don't want to have exactly the same programme).

Remember that you don't have to stick to the pieces in the repertoire list. You can choose a piece/pieces off the list that are comparable in standard which last no more than 7 mins in DipABRSM, a third of the performance time in LRSM and no more than 2 thirds of performance time in FRSM. That way you get to choose what you really like as well as the works on the list.

Have you looked at the Bach Partita in D minor? They ask for the two easier movements and they are quite nice! Some Beethoven might bridge the gap for you from Classical to Romantic as well. Take a look at the rep list and then look up some excerpts on YouTube to get an idea of what they sound like. I find it's best to listen to a piece before I choose it, otherwise I might find out too late that I really don't like it! smile.gif
