Hi all. I have just been given a drum that a friend of a friend found in his cellar. I would love to know where it hails from. If I were clever I would upload a picture of it, but I can't work out to how to do this.

It is about knee-height when standing on the floor, although has a neck strap which puts the top about chest height. It is covered all over with skin and has lots of bits of rope all round vertically from the top to just over half way down; it tapers towards the bottom. It comes with two little wooden sticks. Sorry - not a very good descrpition. A picture would be better - does anyone know how to do this?

You'll have to post a picture or a drawing. It could be a djembe, or more likely a Drabouka/dumbek/Egyptian Tabla. Look those up on the web (or just do a search for 'drums' and let us know). Of course it may be no specific type ... or just a souvenir shop purchase.

No, it's not any of those. It's more egg-shaped (with a flat top of course) than those and has a neck strap and two sticks. I've taken a photograph but I don't know how to get it into my post. anyone.gif

Ah - egg shaped, it could be a dhol, if it has skins at both ends? Typically, these are worn round the neck, and used in bhangra music....
Alison
It does have skins at both ends, but the straps both come from the top end so it looks as if it is meant to be worn vertically. It would be very difficult to play the bottom when wearing it.

Can't anyone tell me how to get a picture on here?

Thanks for trying, Nick - we may get there in the end!

If it's a photo stored on your computer, upload it onto a image hosting site such as PhotoBucket first, and then follow the steps on the FAQ smile.gif

EDIT: Just thinking about it, PhotoBucket actually provides you with a URL within [IMG] [/IMG] tags for each photo you upload to simply copy and paste into the reply box.

I've got a djembe, and it's definitely not the same shape - I've been trying to google it, and so far haven't found anything the same. It looks african though, but I'm no expert so I could be very wrong!

Afraid I'm with choccy doggy - looks African to me, but I don't know of any name for such a thing. Just a generic 'drum' Doesn't look too much like a tourist item, though I'm not sure abotu the sticks ... take ti to yoru local friendly drumming workshop, see if anyone's seen it before!

Sorry ...
